Interview with Miyamoto and Iwata where they say that E3 isn't really where Nintendo will be focusing on "core" games but casual games: quote:
"Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said that the company had to focus on casual gaming this year at E3. "At this E3 we had to focus on software for the mass audience and software that will be sold in this year or next," he told the BBC. "This one of the rare opportunities to reach out to mass audiences around the world." Iwata did mention the 'franchise games' that were largely missing from Nintendo's E3 line-up, saying: "In order for us to create a new Super Mario game or Legend of Zelda game that can cater to the strong demands of core gamers around the world it takes two to three years. "We really want to keep surprising people," he said, then added: "It's not easy at all."" http://computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=193488 quote:
"I think that there’s probably one other element to it, and that’s that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now. So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore. " http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25710005/ Also, from an interview with Nintendo's PR guy: quote:
I think that what you're seeing here at E3 is a very small subset of the games that we have. So basically Nintendo says they have games, but they don't feel like showing them to us because they aren't as important as say "Wii Music" to the mainstream press. I said this already but this just proves my point. Nintendo has a new business strategy, we'll find out about these "core" games whenever they announce them but "casual" gamers won't know if Wii Sports 2 or some crap is announced out of the blue. this sums it up nice: "not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore"
