First off I want to say that while I know this is an old blog from nearly a year ago (July 27th 2007), I think it makes it all that more of an amazing post. This dudes words ring even more true right now then they probably did at the time. A seriously good understanding of the atmosphere of today's gaming climate IMO. Here's the article I figured might start some decent discussion on this slow forum day....

XBox 360 vs PS3: Why It Doesn’t Fucking Matter

For all the back-and-forth criticism I see going on between Sony devotees and so-called “Wii60 fanboys”, when you look at all the cross-platform titles which are either on their way or already available, you must inevitably come to the conclusion that you’re largely getting the same shit no matter which system you buy.

Grand Theft Auto IV * [ad. 360]

Rock Band

Unreal Tournament 3 * [ad. PS3]

Assassin’s Creed
Resident Evil 5
Guitar Hero 3
Soul Calibur 4
Silent Hill 5
Devil May Cry 4 (Sony May Cry)
Army of Two
Brothers in Arms 3
Call of Duty 4
Virtua Fighter 5 * [ad. 360]
F.E.A.R. Files
F.E.A.R. 2
Area 51: Blacksite
Medal of Honor: Airborne
Fall Out 3
The Darkness
Mercenaries 2
Beowulf
Fracture
Stranglehold
Call of Duty 3
Armored Core 4

* extra content grants advantage to one system or another

People often say that the PS3 “has no games”, and to a degree it’s an accurate statement for the moment, but once the cross-platform storm is underway, it’s going to have most of the same games the 360 has. Likewise, PS3 owners who get on a soapbox bitching about “quantity vs quality” and how the 360 only has “crappy shooters” will soon be eating their words when most of the quality PS3 titles are appearing on 360 as well.

While exclusive titles do exist and can provide some reasoning to pick one system or another, the truth is, people place far too much importance on exclusives. Halo is not the end-all be-all of first person shooters, and Metal Gear Solid is equally over-rated. I’ve been a huge Final Fantasy fan since the NES and SNES days, but I’ve been burned by Square Enix far too often lately to really even care about Final Fantasy XIII…much less spend $600 on a console just to play it. It’s nice to see games like Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, and Bioshock straying from the beaten path and trying something new, but many people are treating these games like guaranteed smash hits when the merits of their game play mechanics have yet to be proven.

Xbox 360

Mass Effect

Gears of War
Forza Motorsport 2
Halo 3
Bioshock
Lost Odyssey
Ace Combat 6
Project Gotham Racing 4
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
Call of Juarez
Shadowrun

PS3

Ratchet and Clank

Metal Gear Solid 4
Final Fantasy XIII
Haze
Heavenly Sword
Lair
Little Big Planet
Warhawk
Motorstorm
Gran Turismo 5
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Metal Gear Online
Killzone 2
Resistance: Fall of Man

It looks like a lot of exclusive games, but out of those two lists, there’s only scant few which could really be considered highly enough to drive decisions or be called “killer apz”. I don’t think people will be by-passing the PS3 solely to get their hands on Crackdown or Call of Juarez. Nor are 360 owners really going to cry over missing games like Resistance or Lair.

Ultimately, Sony fanboys can cling all they want to their precious little MGS4, and 360 fans can spew naively about how Halo 3 and Mass Effect will be awesome, but the truth of the matter is, when you consider that red-hot 3rd party franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Guitar Hero, and Resident Evil will be pushing systems on both sides, it turns into a rather moot point.

So yeah, if you’re a really hardcore fan of Ratchet and Clank or Gran Turismo, I can see why you would prefer a PS3. And if you’re a shooter nut or into more avante-gaurde RPG’s, then I can see why you would want a 360 above all else. But, there’s still no reason to get all “high and mighty” on either side. The magnitude of controversy over these systems is uncalled-for and downright stupid.

Lame PS3 FTW

Yea article is very accurate. Multiplat titles will be pulling in consoles on both sides. Possibly more than the exclusives do when you really think about it

PS3 has games, and the 360 isn't just about crappy shooters

gaming on any platform this generation is just bliss, even the Wii

both systems have great games out and great games coming

I believe the PS3 takes the edge in upcoming software and overall features, while the 360 takes the edge in released software and online service

your quip about Sony May Cry was funny, and how is the 360 getting all the PS3 games when most of them are published by Sony

it could get Haze, but thats about it, MGS4 and FF13 WILL NOT!!!! go to the 360

end of discussion

and exclusives play a bigger role than you may think, although probably not as much as others think

PS2 probably won more because of brand trust and a head start more than the heaps of exclusives it had- although those certainly played a role too

At the same time....Unexpected stellar sales = Shovel Ware, Just like happened to the Wii.

The Devs have already decided their business strategies by now. At this point even if the PS3 or 360 starts selling like hot cakes at a lower price ($199) it will have little impact on development for the system until the end of this gen, when the money will be made off of the most popular console with the largest userbase. Just like the PS2 had the large influx of games even during and after the launch of the 360. Still the PS3 and 360 will both get support in the end because between the two it is going to be a monster userbase in a few more years. Since the Userbase of PS2 users has essentially been split.

I have nothing constructive to add to this stupid thread but I just had to point out the irony.

LOL I didn't notice that

anyway yeah, how exactly is LO trying something new

it's a solid JRPG, im not gonna argue that- but it seriosuly rips off every JRPG Square ever made

and brings literally NOTHING new

and I wouldn't brag about Bishock bringing that much new too, again- its an ace game, but it blatantly borrows bits

especially *surprise* System Shock

apart from Mass Effect, Dead Rising (to a certain extent) and maybe Crackdown, there hasn't been a 360 game that really does anything new or innovative

again, great games to play- nothing startalingly new

thats not to say the PS3 has had any of those either, but it seems to be getting them with titles such as MGS4, LBP and Infamous

Heh, you saved me a post

I'd also like to add that he said that MGS4 is equally as overrated as Halo. Both games are overrated, but Halo deserves far less of the praise it gets than MGS does. Just saying.

His initial argument was correct, it doesn't matter, but the points and arguments he put across aren't so good.

Umm who cares?  If you like games you would have BOTH.

For me personally, I like games on both systems.  I do dislike some things that Microsoft does as far as running their business, but there is no denying that they have some great games to play.  PS3 is no slouch, either, so I don't understand why some people say that the 360 is the end-all to gaming when it's just a small equation.

Now excuse me while I go play some GTA4 on PS3 and later on get on Madden on 360.

I agree. Personally it doesn't matter. I have both systems.

There is only one significant difference that I observe. The PS3 hasn't been cracked/chipped/modded yet. 360 has. That is the biggest factor out here regarding console sales.

I think it matters because people don't want to admit to spending 300+ dollars on a shitty console.

I see what you did there, insinuating that I am a prostitute in a lame attempt to insult me, well you know what, shows how ignorant you are. Prostitution has a very complex history with a very unique world with it's own type of culture and social issues. Yet you just lightly toss it around disrespecting all the hard working men and women throughout history who have provided a service despite being looked down, mocked and ridiculed. Or all the poor women out there who are forced into something they do not want to do and live in horrible, painful lives, yet still struggle to survive, yet you mock their pain.

Grow up.
