We all know of 3rd party software, but 3rd party hardware?  A rumor popped up not too long ago about the possibility of 360 hardware being manufactured by companies other then Microsoft.  I doubt this will happen, but it is an interesting idea.  I can think of a couple of positives and a couple of negatives.  What do you all think of this idea?  Remember, this concept has come up in previous generations, just not for an established and successful console yet.

I remember some talk of 3rd party Sega Saturns, but don't think it ever materialized.

I figure if Samsung or anyone else can make a 360 that's either cheaper or more reliable then more power to them. Everyone wins too because MS gets more software sales that way.

Problems could start to arise if MS doesn't keep some pretty strict guidelines for third parties. The whole thing could become as convoluted as buying a PC which would defeat the purpose of having home consoles in the first place.

i think it sounds too much like a PC.  next thing you know there will be generic parts and it just gives the manufacturer the OK to make a crappy product since there will be aftermarket products manufactured by others....

i dont see it being a great idea but as long as they regulate it enough then i guess its ok, too early to tell

EDIT: sorry if thats redundant to what polluted said... when i started typing there was no response yet, but he beat me too it

lol...its the 360 we're talking about here. It as low as you can go in terms of hardware....3rd party might be really good for it.

Although i highly, highly, doubt itll ever happen.

No, your point compliments what Polluted said pretty well.  I agree with the quality issue, but knowing Microsoft, they'd keep a firm hand on that.  As far as software goes, if MS didn't have to throw money at the hardware it would definitely free up cash to develope and promote games.  That would be a plus.
