Somthings been bothering me, a bunch of us went out to a bar last night and we met some new people. this one guy asked me "what my sport was", before i could answer my girlfriend blurts out "he plays video games!!" (she thinks i'm a geek) Then the guy looks at me and laughs and says "oh, your one of those"  I think there is a sterotype that some people put on gamers. Like, if we enjoy playing games then we got picked on in highschool or can't play a sport. I don't know, I've just been trying to figure out what "one of those" means.

I think that's what some people think all gamers are.

that must have been akward- I feel for ya

fact of the matter is, it seems like nearly everyone these days plays games and thus you cant really clissify gamers as "geeks" anymore

besides, most gamers have a life anyway

No I'm not.

Not even people that live in my house know I'm a pure video game addict.

This is something I keep seperate in my life. I know there's a stereotype attached to it and I don't care enough to deal with it and explain it to people who don't appreciate the medium farther than a simple diversion.

Some of you may consider this "not being true to myself", but just ask the OP now how much he wishes he could have kept it away so he can deal with people without having to explain anything or deal with awkward situations.

It's retarded because I'm a self professed musician, movie fanatic and soccer fan and everyone is cool with those even though I'd put them on the same level as being a fan of video games.

Here's a problem I have at work. I have no shame in playing video games and nor should I. A lot of my coworkers play too but we also do a LOT of other things. We have a very physical job, and we work out together and are in no way sedentary.

BUT, even us gamers are seperated. There are those of us who actually do different things, and then there are the FANATICS.

There are about 5 WoW fanatics who do nothing more than talk about playing WoW 24-7. It's annoying, and even I can't stand listening to it. So even I, a gamer, think of these people as "one of those guys." It's hard because it almost feels hypocritical but you've got to give yourself a limit when it comes to anything you love. So it's people like this that make every one who games seem as if we should all fit into a specific stereotype. It sucks, and in all honesty, it will probably never change on a massive scale.

Yeah i'll agree with cheez. I think the stereotype that people are linking to is the WOW people who eat, breathe and sleep WOW. I personally don't care what people think so everyone knows that I play Video Games alot. If they laugh or look at me weird, I ask what do you do in your spare time? Most of the time this TV or something much worse or less interactive than Video Games. So in my eyes I would say that our hobby is much better than alot of them and deserves no shame. I'm also an avid sports fanatic.

Funny thing is, in addition to all the geeky stuff I like, I also enjoy a lot of "non-geeky" things:

For one, I'm a sports nut. I watch football, basketball, and baseball every chance I get. I do fantasy baseball every year.

For another, in addition to all the sci-fi I enjoy, I also love classic TV and old and foreign films. Most of my rather vast film collection consists of classic movies and Asian films (and they're not anime or martial arts...mostly Kurosawa, Ozu, Yimou, etc.). I guess I'm kinda like Harry Knowles, but without the girth (j/k).

And, I follow politics religiously. I'm an active and vocal Libertarian.

I think it's possible to enjoy stereotypically geeky stuff like sci-fi and video games and also be well-rounded in other areas.

So yeah, I'm "one of them." I'm also much more than that.

When people see me in person, the last thing they think I am is a gamer.  Simply because I do not fit the "look" of a gamer.  Kinda works to my advantage though.

I'm one of those, and all of my friends are "those", they're also drunks, dj's, accountants, sales reps, doctors, druggies, psychotic frat boys, strippers, shrinks, etc. Just because a person is a gamer doesn't mean they can easily be shoehorned into that gamer stereotype. Some of the most hardcore gamers I've met have been like guys with wives, kids, a good job, and a damn collection that rivals Gamestop.

At a time when people are always talking about what the f*ck Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan is doing, I'm glad with what I do.  For the record I don't like sports either, unless we're talking Martial Arts (which I practice) or MMA, Parkour, Poker (yes it's a sport dammit), and Women's Beach Volleyball.

That's me. When someone asks if I play video games, I say I do, but I don't pursue the issue.

Thing is,the group of people I stick around aren't interested in games, it comes down to that. Why would I talk or praise something when no one else cares? I have N4G forums for that :P. All that stuff I want to get off my chest about video games, i'm able to do it here where the people are infintely more interesting and diverse.

A similar experience at work. An american colleague recently tried to ridicule me in front of other colleagues for playing video games. I am in my 30's, and according to him, should have grown up a long time ago.

Fine mate. Whatever. You see, if my being a gamer makes me a pariah of sorts, lets turn the tables superman!

1. I never come into work with the smell of alcohol on my breath from the previous night. My colleague excels at this.

2. I don't spend a hefty percentage of my salary on importing cuban cigars in order to look "sophisticated". Unlike my colleague, who also smells like that "cherry mixed with shit" cigar odour.

3. I have been living in bliss with the woman of my dreams, my wife, for 4 years. My "superhero" colleague hires hookers and has profiles on various adult sites.

4. I earn a modest salary and get by quite well with it. I don't bullshit people in the same job as me with stories of multi-million dollar furniture deals in Dubai. Again this guy......

So I reckon that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, coz people like me will throw bricks right back at them.

I play football and wrestle at my local high school...and most of my friends do too...and all of them play games...its not a big deal...almost everyone plays some kind of games...I had my gf into games for awhile too..and she was a volleyball and softball player..I think it's crap about stereotyping...if someone said something like that to me about "Oh Your one of those"...I would have asked him what his sport was and then said the same thing...
