Can I use my new SLIM to wipe clean my old HD? - Friday, November 06, 2009 7:58 PM
My old 60GB got YLOD. I fixed it but the YLOD came back and I don't feel like dealing with it again. I want to wipe clean my entire hard drive from the old unit so I can sell the broken PS3. Since YLOD won't let me start up my system, can I use the new SLIM I just bought to format my old 60GB drive?

I just want to make sure I'm not going to screw anything up on my new machine by putting in a different hard drive. I was a bit worried I would use up one of my activations if I did this.

I still have to call Sony to deactivate the old unit. RIP 60GB PS3.

Well, the only thing that you can do when you remove a hard drive from a PS (slim or otherwise) and plug in a hard drive, is to format that hard drive.  So theoretically, you'll be formatting the drive on the PS3 slim, then putting it back into the PS3 fat.  Whoever then buys the system from you may have to reformat it again when they try to start it up.  Also, you'll end up having to reformat your current PS3 slim drive when you put it back in later, so back up everything you've got.

I just bought the SLIM today so I haven't even started it up yet. In theory it sounds like it'll work. Since I have nothing on the SLIM reformatting it won't be a big deal. Whoever buys my old 60GB PS3 I don't really care if they have to reformat my main goal is just to wipe the old HD clean so all my stuff is off it.

For people considering doing this in the future... DO NOT DO IT. It will not FULLY format your HD. I think it only does a partial format getting rid of things like music, videos, and pictures. It does NOT delete your profiles. I learned the hard way by having some a s s h o l e charge couple games to my credit card (I sold my broken PS3 to someone who managed to get it fixed and go into the PSN store and buy couple games because all my info was stored). It's okay though, revenge is sweet. Sony is banning his console.

that sucks... but when you are in the ps3.. there is an option to do a full reformat.  Did you do this... or when the slim started up, you just chose the first option of formatting and not going into the settings and performing a full reformat.  I heard the full reformat takes like hours.

All work and no play.. makes odion go something something
