Clean up Game Index Section
-
Saturday, August 16, 2008 5:09 PM
I think there needs to be a way to remove the duplicate games in the Game Index portion of this site. There are multiple versions of games because users misspell games, uses numbers instead of roman numerals, add the secondary title of a game, etc... Some examples I've run into: - Diablo III, Diablo 3, Diable 3 (spelled wrong)
- Soul Calibur IV, Soulcalibur IV, Soul Caliber IV (spelled wrong)
- Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto 4, GTA 4, GTA4
- Madden NFL 09, Madden 09
And I'm sure there are bunches more. I think there should be a way for users to bring this to the Admins' attentions, and merge the news/reviews into 1 concise database. This would also help catch more duplicate stories I think. Any one else agree?

Indeed Columbo, and I do believe its going to be addressed shortly. Its actually quite a task to "clean up" the index for the following reason... Every approved N4G news sub associated with one of the incorrect or duplicate game(s) needs to be edited and the related game swapped with the correct and only listing of that game. Thanks for bringing it up and my advice is for now when submitting news add all the variations of the related game.

OK guys heres what I need from the members of N4G.... - It would be of much appreciation if when you come across or notice: duplicate, mispelled or inproper games in the game index please post them in here.
I am going to go ahead and pin this to the top so you dont have to search for this thread. I am working on compiling a list of my own and I am not sure how long it will take to merge the wrong games into the right ones, but hopefully it wont take that long.

Just to check how many there were I copied all the PS3 games and pasted them in a text document and they filled up 20 pages.

Cool, my topic was pinned to the top of the forum. Anyway, ones I just ran across: - Street Fighter 4, Street Fighter IV
- halo, Halo CE, Halo: Combat Evolved
- Little Big Planet, LittleBigPlanet
If you need help, let me know what I can do. But I'll be on the lookout for more duplicate games.

Thanks guys keep em comming We have gotten alot of them merged and fixed up... If I posted my findings it would bring this thread into the next page! Concentrate on the current and upcomming games... Those are the ones we are most concerned about. You dont need to post link to the game profile unless you want to...

Ok, the game index is absolutely atrocious. I just scanned through the PS3 section and more than half of the games listed don't even exist. Seriously, 300? Astro Zoo? Bucaneer? Bounty Killer? Bolt? Box Office Bust? Brain Challenge? Bioware? Black Noise Engine? Black Powder, Red Earth? Oh, this one here really takes the cake. You ready for this? Here it is, "Blog editer order game but no game just a paid vacation and hes mad about it." What the heck is that doing in the game index? In case you couldn't tell, I am disgusted by N4G inability to clean up the game index after all this time.

Lemo, I understand what you are saying. but here is the situation... The current tools involved in removing and/or swapping related games from the index are not so user friendly and at this point the only ones that are able use them are the N4G webmasters. They are developing an easier to use tool for the other administration. When that happens a lot of these will be cleaned up quickly and properly.

No estimates... Untill that time comes however as long as everyone contributes to this thread and supply's names of (Duplicate,NonExistant,Cancelled) Game Titles in the Index we can still deal with them accordingly every now and then. note that Cancelled games do not get removed from the index - they are only tagged with a Visible Cancelled marker
