If there was to be an impending attack from an alien race coming from another planet/galaxy/solar system do you think Earth is prepared to defend itself and do you think we have any possible chance of defeating a far more technological race?

If there's a race out there that can launch an attack from outside our solar system... we're already doomed. No freaking way we'd have a chance. What's the farthest man has ever traveled, the moon? The only chance I could see is some cheesy ass thing like at the end of War of the Worlds where bacteria ends up killing the aliens.

Seriously... wtf was with that ending... even though the aliens had already come here thousands of years ago, and had been watching us ever since... they didn't know about bacteria? LAME!!

...but I digress...

edit- My guess, it would be like a fight between our race and a near equal amount of monkeys.

Beleive it or not, me and my cousin discussed this last night. When you think about ,we still use weapons that fire lead projectiles from an explosive powder....FUTURIStIC. If a race advanced wenough to find our planet and saftley eneter our atmosphere comes, it must posses weapons a tad bit more..... exciting. I know we have nukes, but chances are we'd do mre harm to out planet to them, maybe before they come(if of coarse)

What if the aliens spent all their time on useful things like space travel while we were sitting here trying to figure out ways to destroy each other? We're a warlike people with a lot of weaponry on our planet.

what i find funny about movies is somehow these advanced aliens are generally naked running around. i mean, they would obviously be wearing protective suits to protect them from viruses and physical harm.

and yeah, war of the worlds was dumb. i'm sure if the aliens have been here that long they would have become resistant to our viruses.

anyway, i don't see how we can defend ourselves from a race that has the intelligence of inter-stellar travel. they're way out of our league.
like in that Independence Day movie, we'd get owned in a matter of days.
and no Will Smith or Jeff Goldbloom would save us... that was another stupid ending... yeah, i'm sure a highly advanced alien race magically adopted our programming languages to power themselves.
