Well, I'm off to college at the end of next year and I plan to be doing alot of graphic and programming work.  as I'm getting a general idea of what to put in my custom computer, the biggest point of controversy seems to be between DDR2 and DDR3 ram.  As I think we all remember the battle between DDR and DDR2 in terms of latency and bandwidth, I was wondering which of the new contestants you folks think will win.  I myself am rooting for DDR2, not because of any logical reasoning, but because I just don't want to pay $400 on four gigs of ram...

the latencies on DDR3 are getting better, they almost much DDR2 latencies

and who can argue with more capacity, higher clock speeds and reduced energy consumption (global warming and all that you know, which makes me lol because the fact that its caused by human involvment is a myth)

I dont know what you mean by "win" though

nearly everyone has moved onto DDR2, and in due course they'll move onto DDR3 too

its like saying which will win, the PS2 or PS3, lol

of course DDR3 will "win", the real question is- how long before it becomes the standard? and how long before the latencies match that of DDR2

im pissed off about the lack of BC for DDR3 on boards, but its cool- im picking up some DDR3 and a relevant board sometime in the summer

Yeah, I guess that I was just hoping to convince myself that the cheaper option was better .  But seeing as you seem pretty well informed, maybe you can help me out on something else, do you prefer an nforce chipset or intel 48x chipset on your motherboard?  Ive also heard controversy btween the 780 and 790 on the nforce side.

it depends on your budget really

I would buy DDR3 ram next year, just buy a motherboard now which supports both DRR2 and DDR3 so you have the option to upgrade at some point. I'm gonna be using DDR2 for the time being as its cheap and good.

Yeah, I was looking on crucial at memory, and they don't have ballistix in 2 gig ddr3 sticks yet, anybody know how long it should be?  I don't know how long it was with ddr2.  Also, does anybody here use ballistix?
