On Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, sure it got Japan to surrender, but over 300,000 lives were lost

I know this is a serious issue and all, and I'm writing a report on it right now, but do you guys think dropping the bomb was the right call?

I mean, there could have been other ways to make Japan surrender. What are your thoughts on this?

(I'm not sure if this topic is inappropriate to be discussed here, but if it is, i'll understand if it gets locked)

Shouldn't have attacked Pearl Harbor to get us involved in the war.

Yes and no innocent people died in Pearl Harbor.  Right.

i think it was a nessesary evil
300,000 lives may have been lost but imagine how many were saved.
if japan continued the war and the US didnt drop the bomb eventually even more lives would of been lost. likely more than the bomb itself caused.

I have to agree with that, I mean if the conflict continued, and X amount of american soldiers lost their lives, that would have made the president look bad to the american people, seeing as he had the means to prevent those deaths.

I also believe those specific cities played an important role in the decision

i mean if we had bombed Tokyo, then we would have killed the Emperor, who is, according to the Japanese, a descendant of their god. Meaning we would have beaten the Japanese god. Then the Japanese defiantly wouldn't have surrendered.

I don't think a right call can be made about war, to start war is a bad call and every related decision linked to it is bad, sure, it ended the war, but it was just the lesser or two evils.

In an analogy of sorts, you could say Japan slapped the US in the face, so in retaliation, the US took machineguns, cannons, anti-tank missiles and released their triggers right in Japan's face. At the same time, if there was no retaliation, things would've gotten worse. You can decide yourself if that is justified, I really don't have a full-out opinion on it.

A "slap" that caused the death of over two thousand military personal.  A "slap" that caused the death of 68 civilians.  A "slap" that was a clear attempt to get the US involved in the war.  The US got involved, and Japan payed the price, a terrible one, for their stupidity.

I agree, if engaging in war was stupid, nearly every country in the world, including our own, is stupid....don't get me wrong, it was "wrong" but i don't think intellengence has anything to do with it.

Paradise, I'm not saying the US is perfect.  Our government has done horrible things, and continues to do so.  I know what you are talking about, but in this situation, it was Japan's fault.

Well it all relates to the bomb, I mean pearl harbor is what brought the U.S. into WW2.

But I think that the U.S. did need to beat Japan before the Soviet Union, to keep it from becoming a communist country, so i guess that kinda pushed Truman to drop the bombs to get Japan to surrender
