FAR CRY 2 INFORMATION THREAD Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Publisher: Ubisoft Engine: Dunia Platforms: PC, PS3, 360 Genre: Freeroaming FPS Multiplayer: Yes, apparently Releasedate: PC Fall 2008 Far Cry 2 News Developer Blog Update Far Cry 2 Release Date Fall 2008 GDC Blog Entry Gamespot Interviews Far Cry 2 Features Far Cry 2, the next-generation first-person shooter from Ubisoft, will take you deep into the most beautiful but also most hostile environments in the world: Africa! More than just a visual and technological achievement, Far Cry® 2, the true sequel to the award-winning PC game, will provide you with an unprecedented gaming experience. Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out "The Jackal", a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfill your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit their weaknesses, and neutralize their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force. Open World The extensive artistic research combined with the next-gen engine will allow you to explore over 50Km2 of seamlessly rendered African landscape. No game has ever provided such freedom of movement! Dunia Engine The Dunia Engine was built specifically for Far Cry® 2 by the award-winning Ubisoft Montréal development team. It delivers the most realistic destructible environments, amazing special effects such as dynamic fire propagation and storm effects, real-time night-and-day cycle, dynamic music system, non-scripted enemy A.I. and so much more... Real-Time Immersion Real-time storytelling, systemic auto-healing, minimal in-game interface are just few of the features that will make you feel the tension of being alone against barbarous warlords that threaten thousands of innocent lives. Weapons of Choice Choose from a wide range of weapons to make your way to your primary target. Meet the fight head-on with your machine-gun, go berserk with your machete or make stealth kills as a Sniper. If you feel that the atmosphere is not warm enough, light up your flamethrower and let your enemies and everything around them feel the heat. Vehicles Game will have over 14 vehicles to choose from. Fly, Drive, Run, slide and hover over the huge open world with your glider, trucks, cars, boats and much more. One popular vehicle returning is the glider. Interactive Environments Game features fully interactive, dynamic and destructible environments. Every building, vehicle, object, weapon, tree, grass, branches and leafs are fully interactive and destructible. This means they can catch fire, be shot down or just react to the wind. Weapon Mechanics There will be 30 weapons to choose from. Weapons can break down from extensive use; bullets may miss the target due to strong wind and such. Locations There will be over 50 square kilometers to explore. Some of the locations are River Network, Desert Crash site, Shanty Town, Dogon village, Desert Water hole, Savannah, Jungle Factions and Characters There are 2 factions in the game, the United Front for Liberation and Labor and Alliance for Popular Resistance. There are also numerous characters: Warlord, The Jackal, Marty Alencar, Warren Clyde, Nasreen Davar, Hakim Echebbi, Paul Ferenc, Flora Guillen, Andre Hyppolite, Josip Idromeno, Frank Bilders and so on... Far Cry 2 Screenshots Editorials The freedom to explore this open world is FC2's biggest hook: from the moment you're in control, the game is there to respond to your whims. No linear storyline here: things will happen in accordance with the way you play the game, and how the AI reacts. The times and locations and characters of events will be different for every play-through, making you a real influence in the world. It's the sort of thing Boiling Point and Stalker grew up wanting to be. Having witnessed Far Cry 2 in action I'm excited about the possibilities. The engine offers the usual first-person violence, but within an extremely reactive world. Think of the physics in Crysis - collapsable trees and crumbling buildings - but with greater scope, so that you can destroy trees on distant mountains and blow up entire villages from afar. The huge playing area allows for any number of approaches: you can snipe a guard from a distance, leaving him injured in the hope that it draws his friends out, or you can barrel a car right through the walls, ploughing into the breakable scenery like a rubbish F1 driver. But there's a lot more to FC2 than that: this is a more accurate simulation than a shooter has any right to be, with a full day-night cycle, storms and the sort of sunsets you'd have to spend your life savings to see for real. PC Gamer Even at pre-alpha, you can't help but be impressed by the game's scale, attention to detail and sense of fun. Everything is real, from the guns to the enemy militia's behaviour to the way the trees react to the breeze and splinter upon impact. The sort of emergent, environment-based gameplay that we're seeing, even in this first ever showing, is extremely exciting. Eurogamer Put simply, Far Cry 2 is the closest game we've seen yet to a true "open world," and that's not just because you can roam around the entire game without ever seeing a loading screen. The only plot and environmental elements that are set in stone--the story's "superstructure," as creative director Clint Hocking puts it--are those described in the previous paragraph. Everything else is mutable, based on your actions, allegiances, and chosen missions, and ultimately the cascading effects of all those choices you make. Gamespot It's hard to say which aspect of Far Cry 2 is most impressive--the game's powerful tech and excellent audiovisual effects help create a beautiful-looking, constantly changing world full of clever enemies, as well as weapons and vehicles with realistic damage models. However, its fast-paced gameplay looks extremely challenging and should offer plenty of opportunities to use very different strategies in how you want to approach your missions--whether using brute force, sniping enemies from a distance, or even using hit-and-run tactics by keeping a fast vehicle nearby. One thing's for sure: Far Cry 2 is one of the most impressive games we've seen in a long time. Gamespot #2 The expansive open world, comprising savannah, desert and jungle, dustbowl colonial towns, corrugated iron shanties and Dogon villages, is continuous, with new areas loading seamlessly. It can be traversed by one of many vehicles, which include rustbucket hatchbacks, roaring dune buggies, the ever-useful Land Rover, boats and a hang glider, and is fenced with a ring of impassable desert – venture in and your car will eventually overheat and you’ll fall from heat exhaustion. Herd animals graze before fleeing at any disturbance, while grass, bushes and trees sway with the wind, which can boil up into dark squalls, sending leaves and branches flying and whipping the grass into waves. More than most virtual worlds, this one looks and feels deeply credible. Broad fronds of jungle undergrowth are translucent, with shadows from those above showing through, and orange dust is thick in the late afternoon sun. The level of detail on the latest build is a good deal higher than that seen at Far Cry 2’s original unveiling at Leipzig in August. Edge "The first thing we noticed when we set foot in the African savannah is that it's filled with **bleep**." says an earnest Alexandre. "There's seriously all shapes and all sizes. We have to include it - it's just the first thing that you notice!" So there you go. Far Cry 2 - set to be packed with only the most authentic of excrement.
