I don't visit the forums as much as most of you regulars, but I've been around for a few months. When I joined at the beginning of the year(I'd been coming here longer), this forum was great and virtually empty of  users that didn't serve a purpose. Almost everyone here had useful or entertaining message to share, and it was by and far the most enjoyable gaming forum around.

Fast forward to the end of April, and you see what we have now. I'm not saying new users are bad, they are necessary. I also know that I'm not exactly a well known regular or elder of this site. All I'm saying is it might be useful to limit some of the people that join this site. Just today -The first day I've posted on these forums in a little while- I noticed a flood of new members(comparative to beginning of the year).

Maybe we could have the forum require a test much like the contributor test. We could even require a review of their posts on the main site by a mod. The latter would be a bit too much work I think, but just the trouble of something like applying for the ability to post on a forum would deter most teenage spammers.

I'm sure some of the more creative members of this forum can come up with better solutions.

Afterthought: Just a one week waiting period to use the forums would actually work pretty well I think. Long enough to deter most spammers, but not long enough to scare away a user who genuinely cares about games.

Maybe we should have a test for overzealous brothers too.

ouch

I'm serious, albeit most likely a little too unsettled. Just a delay between joining and being able to post on the forums.

I'm not sure, but look at this.

http://forums.n4g.com/memberlist.aspx?currpage=1&criteria=3&orderSC=2&customregfield=0

If nothing else its amusing.

In any case, N4G is doing really good commercially speaking. It just peeves me to see a user with a big 1 by their name jump in to an argument like they've been there. At least introduce yourself.

I beg to differ.Judging new members is akin to despotism and nepotism  in my book.
What's wrong with them?Their voices are as precious as old timers.
Have you read the amount of crap members of this site can spout(including me,though i am relatively new here),even
in the forums? And i'm talking of veterans too. They may be new but there
is actually very little chance that they will even venture onto the forums.
Active members in the forums actually represent a minority.

I know, that bugs me as well, if its your first post, you should have the common courtesy to introduce yourself before you start arguing with the forum regulars.

Random people don't walk up and start in on a discussion between a group of people they don't even know in the streets, they shouldn't really do that here either

I disagree

Judging from the number of forum regulars versus the number of main site commenter's the forum is restrictive enough as it is. With the confusing PGD code and the avatar size limit, it's difficult to regularly post in the forums. ***The vast majority will disagree, for very obvious reasons***

The ability to submit, report, and approve news all need to be more restrictive.

yeah the problem is if they all introduce themselves we will have like a billion intro threads a day lol.

Anyways,

It doesn't bother me too much, its just spammers and the flame bait topics buteven with that said, its still pretty peaceful in the forums, and the as for the spammers, their time here is fairly short lived.

I still consider these forums teh awesome since there are great people here, and it remains for the most part peaceful.

And i think i would have alot of trouble finding a better forum especially with some of the people i have gotten to know on this site, mainly the forums.

Granted there could be improvements, but what the OP is sugessting could hinder it instead of helping it, at least to that extreme.

Harry - I'm not saying that they arent as valuable as elders on the site, I'm saying that anyone can get in that wants to. We've had at least two spam articles today that wasted my time, and are open to many others.

I welcome new members to this forum if they want to come, and would gladly greet them if they introduced themselves.

Its more of a better safe than sorry thing. The forums have gone slightly downhill recently, and any small measure would do the trick.

Jdash - My thoughts exactly. I'm glad we see eye to eye.

It's true... the forums are not as great as their former days. I'm not exactly sure what it is; if it's the flood of new members, if it's lack of conversation, or regulars leaving and new ones coming.

Truth be told though... the forums are not as great as they were in times of old (I'm talking around the time-frame of June 2007 - December 2007).

While the idea to "limit" people from creating accounts and holding off of commenting is a good idea, it really would be too off-putting to members that really do want to stay. Most of the new accounts are spammers or 1-2 time posters. As for the PGD coding... it's really not that hard, and avatar size/limit should not deter people from posting. In fact, it has nothing to do with posting... just your personal profile.

Deep underneath all the "crud" that we have now is still the old N4G forums... the good forums, with the good people. The people that think before they comment, have fun, and talk about things they love. The old regulars still reveal themselves, and the regular regulars (of course) are always around.

This is a tight-knit community, one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of being a member of. Dusty and DragonFly have really put together one helluva gaming site, but what really makes a site great is it's members. We have ample people here who are smart, witty, funny, kind, compassionate, and just a general joy to have around. Even with influxes of new members, they always seem to die out, and the regulars continue to push through the muck and make their daily postings. No doubt about it... N4G forums are one of the best forums on the Internet!

I'm still all for a minimum post count of 50 before you are allowed to create a thread.  This will get rid of those advertisers, and stupid threads that end up being locked, created by n00bs.

I don't think things need to come to that. Pre-reqs make this forum seem like it's very elitist. Yeah some of us have elite skills, but we shouldn't be pompous about it.

What we should be doing instead is helping the new forum members adjust and enforcing the rules and conduct that should be observed.

Worse comes to worse, the Admins will have to make some examples.

I think it may just be GTA issues. A lot of people feel the need to ask others for suggestions on those problems.

Wow, this topic is kinda harsh. As you all know I'm new here (guess that would make me a Boob....I mean Noob) I would have never known this site if it wasn't for your advertisement in PC Gamer. Maybe you shouldn't advertise so much if you don't want your numbers to grow drastically. Sorry if you don't like my post on this but it's just my opinion.

By the way I love some of the info I have found on this site in the news sections about PC gaming and system hardware. But your PC gaming section here in the forums is kinda lacking. I will try to liven it a bit in the future but it seems like most of your people are console fanboys hence the reason for a lot of young spammers. Once again it's just my opinion, but what do I know....I'm just a noob.

yeah, I'm not so sure that sounds entirely fair. I only recently joined myself, but it wasn't because of the gta buzz or to spam. Truth be told i've been visiting the site and listening to the podcast for a while now and found myself making daily visits so decided to join. I think it would of detered me if iI had to go through a screening process to join one of my favorite sites when I've been visiting it longer than some of you "old folks" have been actual members. I didn't just find it one second and joined the next, and I'm 24 years old looking for mature gaming conversation, I would of hated to be classified as a teenage spaming fanboy.

new members is not an issue, what kind of foolish thing is that? o im sorry we not taking new members because we love our old ones and we dont want to increase our community. fools.

anyways the forums should work like this, there is a certain amount of post you can made depending on howmany stars or what is your level in the forum. thats how it should work.

and you cant make a thread unless you are 3 weeks or a month old.

if you have any suggestion and would like to see some changes before the next site update then go to this thread
