I am looking for an RPG game to get me interested in the genre.  The only one I have ever played is oblivion and mass effect, which are ok, but not great.  Are there any that I should try out that could help me get interested in those types of games?

You should try Diablo 2. Games like Fallout and Torment are too complex for start. As for J-RPGs, I suggest any of the main FF games or Shin Migami Tensai ones.

I take it's western RPGs you are talking about?

If your looking for a more traditional turn based RPG then ‘Lost Odyssey’ is very good, you can easily knock up 45+ hours. I haven’t played ‘Blue Dragon’ but that’s another 360 one which has got good reviews.

I don’t know if you will like them to much though, Oblivion & Mass Effect are two very good examples of western RPG’s.

New ones or old ones?  Highly suggest FF:Tactics either for PSP or PS1 there are also GBA and DS versions but the story is not as dark and political as the original but the gameplay is amazing non-the-less.  Dragon Quest is an excellent JRPG but you might be turned off on the level grinding needed

Newer ones are a bit slim pickins right now.  You'd have to wait till years end to get a decent selection.  Fallout 3, Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles, and White Knight Chronicles.  So if you want some PS3 RPGs to test the waters just wait a little bit and it'll be all good.

For RTS style Rpg's try
FF Tactics for the PSP or any of the Fire Emblem games
Western RPGs I don't know much about, but you should try out KOTOR
As for JRPGs try Rouge Galaxy, Tales of Symphonia and FF12 to start.

i wouldnt start final fantasy with 12...maybe 10, b/c that one was a bit easier, but definitely tactics on psp, because it's easier to understand(better translated) and its on the go. Jeanne D'Arc is just like FF tactics but, idk, not as fun, i never finished it.  Dragon Quest turned me off b/c i hated the grinding i had to do.  Kingdom Hearts is good and easy to pick up, if you can get past the fact that there are disney characters in it, its really good.

I always wanted to try that dragon RPG by Square, but i forget what its called.
