Who do you guys think is the greatest game developer of all time?

My choice is easily Blizzard, not only do they have the most popular MMO in history, one that has become a culture staple, but they also created the hack and slash rpg, perfected RTS games, and have never made a bad game.

On top of the massive sales that they get from each game blizzards impact of the culture seems to go beyond with each game, Warcraft is a household name, Starcraft is South Korea, and Diablo is revered in almost all gaming circles

Then there is their ability to really take their time, Blizzard doesn't whore out of franchise or spit a squeal out every 2 years, they spend however long they need to, to make the best game possible. If you look at Diablo 3 and SC2, if any other gaming franchise was just ignored for a decade, a sequel would be seen as nothing special, but these two already have massive steam and are picking up more as time goes by.

In the end, I don't think there is another company that can make the same impact, have the same polish and and completely and utterly dominate genres and markets like Blizzard can.

I'm going to talk in terms of individuals and not companies:

Pick any of those three:

Michel Ancel

Sid Meier

Miyamoto

I'm with you Bloodmask, Nintendo probably is the top one.  It's definitely one of the most influential developers in gaming history.  Blizzard may have had a couple of hit games, but it doesn't have the track record that Nintendo has had.

That's tough because so many devs have a great start, then they just turn to suck. Shiny comes to mind. Or Rare. I'll go with ID Software. They've been consistently good with flashes of brilliance along the way for a lot of years now.

Anyone of Nintendo's EAD teams (zelda, mario, metroid, startropics, etc.). Followed by Valve, Blizzard, and Sega (when in their prime). Microsoft game Studios, Insomniac, and Rare (again in prime) aren't too shabby either though. Just ignore the inevitable Kojima Productions posts.

A couple of hits? Including expansion pacs, Blizzard has made 12 games, all of them to critical and commercial success.

Blackthorne was sweet, but it wasn't really a commercial success. Also that old Superman game sucked. I think it was on 32x or something. Since then they've done well for themselves, though.

So Nintendo/Sega and even Rare made at least 30 hits. The average Rare game sold 1 million copies.

Blizzard may have hit it big with the MMO crowd, but that doesn't mean that they are great.  They got really lucky with a couple of titles (expansions are just a cheap way of adding to an experience).

And Nintendo has been that way since 1983.
