Well both Final Fantasy 3 and 4 are really good on DS. Theres also Magical Starsign which is okish. A little bit more off the cuff and lighthearted is Mario & Luigi; Superstar Saga. Also something a bit different is the Square-Enix developed World Ends with You. Dragon Quest; Monsters is a pokemon-esque take on Dragon Quest, I actually quite enjoyed it only got mediocre review scores though. Entrian Odyssey and Shiren the Wanderer for some old school hardcore RPG action. I have Shiren and it is brutal...turnbased Rogue like RPG where death means death and straight back to the start of the game.

One to keep an eye on for the future is the Sonic RPG by Bioware, looks intriguing.

For starters action rpgs are always good or pokemon type game.  FFCC Rings of Fate and Heroes/Children of Mana would be good even Mario & Luigi Partners in Time.

As for the best I just got a new favorite with the FFIV remake   There are many upcoming that could trump it though

Yeah FFIV is harder than previous releases we have seen in both the US and UK..it has previously been toned down for us...

Compaired to what it once was and what Final Fantasy games have been this is a rather hard one.  Specially the boss fights you can't just be a high level you need to think about what you are doing.

edit: glad you are enjoying FFIV as well though
