In a major step forward on “The Hobbit,” Guillermo del Toro has signed on to direct the New Line-MGM tentpole and its sequel. The widely expected announcement -- which had been rumored for several weeks -- came Thursday afternoon jointly from exec producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, New Line president Toby Emmerich, and Mary Parent, newly named chief of MGM’s Worldwide Motion Picture Group.
Del Toro’s moving to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his Wingnut and Weta production teams. He’ll direct the two films back to back, with the sequel dealing with the 60-year period between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Do you mean "The Hobbit" the book written by J.R.R Tolkien? If you do I think it will be really good since I read the book and it is an awesome prequel to the Lord of The Rings series.

The Hobbit was better than LOTR.

Yeah, but LOTR has really nice action scenes.

Yes we are, but when I read the books I envision much more action in the LOTR series than The Hobbit.

Bilbo is the only non-pussy Baggins.

The Hobbit > Lord of the Rings by far.  I can't wait for this... but is there any info on who is playing Bilbo?

I think it's kind of weird that it will be in two movies...not that there isn't the content, just that the whole isn't really preserved.

Dammit.i missed the part where it mentioned the movie and it's sequel.
Maybe it will stop (the first part)where Bilbo is in the....thing....drifting......

Harry Potter inspires many it seems today.

Not really convinced by Del Toro either.

If Peter Jackson chose him to direct, then it's safe to say that it's all good.

I found this on IGN:
Director Guillermo del Toro recently revealed that Lord of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellen might return for The Hobbit, and now the actor himself has confirmed that he'll reprise his role as the wizard Gandalf for the prequel.

"Yes, it's true," McKellen informed Empire Online. "I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that [Lord of the Rings director] Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it's not a part that you turn down. I loved playing Gandalf."

The Oscar nominee also spoke about del Toro's plans to shoot not only The Hobbit but also a second film inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. "Well I've read The Hobbit so I've got a good idea of what the story would be," the actor said.

McKellen continued, "But as to how it's going to work over two films and what going to happen on screen, well Guillermo has not got down to working out the major details yet – I can tell you it's going to be amazing though."

So wait harry, are they splitting the hobbit into two films, or is the second film just going to be inspired by the Tolkein universe, not directly related to any book?  That kind of confused me there.

Ok first off wtf your not convinced by Del Tero??!?! HAVE YOU SEEN PAN'S LABERYTHN???? Its like one of the greatest freaking movies ever made, LIKE EVER, like it was compared to Citizen Kain.

Ya the splitting is confusing me now I heard that they were doing the book as two movies prob end the first when he's lost in the mountain and then the second would pick up from there.

Now I am hearing that the second is like a film between the Hobbit and LOTR

I have to agree with Odion. Guillermo del Toro > Peter Jackson in every way. I'm waiting for hellboy 2(even though hellboy 1 sucked) because it looks awesome, and made by Guillermo del toro.

Personally,i don't think Pan's Labyrinth was such a great movie.I wouldn't even
dare compare it to Citizen KANE.It was good, but not superb,it felt a little bit
monotonous and overrated, hell, most of Del Toro's work is overrated. But it could
be me,maybe i am impervious to the distinctive charms of his cinematography.
The saving grace of this movie i think was Sergi Lopez,a very very good actor.
I am not convinced, but there should be no reason why The Hobbit could not turn out to be good movie.

Mind you,i watched Cronos and i know what i am talking about.

The Hobbit is scheduled for 2010,part 2011.
