Hulu to Charge Users in 2010 - Friday, October 23, 2009 10:02 PM

hase Carey, the deputy chairman of News. Corp -- which co-owns Hulu -- says the popular online destination that carries TV programming, will start charging users, probably as soon as 2010, B&C reports. Noting that “It’s time to start getting paid for broadcast content online,” Carey added that “I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value. Hulu concurs with that, it needs to evolve to have a meaningful subscription model as part of its business.”
Carey made his remarks at B&C's On-Screen Summit in New York on Oct. 21. He later told B&C's Claire Atkinson that not all content on Hulu would be behind a pay wall.
Interestingly, at the TVWeek Innovation360 Conference last week, Jeff Bewkes, chairman and CEO of Time Warner, said that Hulu would eventually go to a pay model. "That's not an if," Bewkes said, "that's a when."  Looks like "eventually" is coming sooner than later.
More importantly, it indicates that a number of media executives at the very top of their companies believe that TV shows on the Web cannot just be given away, especially to those users who don't have cable or some sort of TV service for which they pay.

Yeah that's pretty lame but I'm sure there will be some other source which is similar soon (if there's not already)

Oh well looks like I will stop using Hulu in 2010.

^I use hulu to watch some episodes of shows that I missed, but I can easily do that on their network site, which is what I will do.

If it becomes premium, they should at least open up their doors to worldwide viewership.

If they step it up with HD content and have more content in general (more content from channels including premium channels), I don't see why it would be so bad. In fact I would see this a good competitor to Cable and Satellite t.v. which you would be paying more for.

But that would mean they would have to really have good content and perhaps some live content too, though that might be an issue. If they don't step up their content though, I probably wouldn't.

But, it's becoming pretty common for people to use Boxee, Windows Media Center on computers and a variety of other programs, then of course set-top boxes, 360's Ps3's etc to watch shows, stream music etc via many of these programs. So I'm not totally afraid of a little change. For movies now I usually just netflix blu-ray then watch movies on demand when I please so I think it may not be so bad. While Hulu certainly wants to make money, they may also see potential in this and step up their game, but we will have to see. I wouldnt mind sticking it to Time Warner and Comcast aside from internet (Or in my case Charter Communications)

I doubt it, there's too many websites competing with youtube already if they did so they would fail. Hard.

Only those who don't know how to pirate. And actually take to time to filter out the **** upon **** programming they have on that cesspool site of failure sketch comedy and FOX shows.

Add people outside of the US don't (it's also not available in Canada right? I beleive it isn't anywhere else aside from the US)

Yeah right now Hulu doesn't have all the shows I would want which is a problem. If they do start charging they do need to get more content and had it in a somewhat HD format that looks/sounds decent.

The problem I find with most torrented stuff is just it looks/sounds like crap most of the time. I would prefer to have a premium service that provides decent quality content. I just hope Hulu actually does it, but that's might be a bit too ambitious. Though what I am thinking would probably be more like a combination of Netflix and Hulu. But I'm also thinking of this being more of an alternative to Cable/Sat T.v. But again that might be a bit too ambitious.

I honestly don't think hulu is even that popular. Charging a service is pretty suicidal when you can watch half the stuff they have on there without the ad's on youtube. Sure if you're quick you can view them before the legal system finds out someone is leaking their **** to the public and BAM. "Video removed because of blah blah blah legal ****". Most people upload MP4 quality videos and download them straight from youtube using a simple code. The video may be brought down. But that MP4 will live on someones desktop just to be uploaded again, and again, and again.

Honestly youtube makes it too easy, compared to hulu.

yup, same for me [related above poster] I too didnt use it much and there will ALWAYS be free alternative.
Too bad 4 hulu tho.... like they weren't makin enough dough from the ads? really?
Then start charging more to teh companies 4 ads... Instead of the web users who already get raped for the connection to teh net.

I'm not sure if it's totally easier to access. You have an app like Hulu Desktop, Media Center, Boxee, etc which could pretty much do all of that fairly simply with a remote if you wish (granted youtube as well). Unless you just mean the amount of content. But my issue is kinda with Youtube as well. They supposedly were going to have HD video but not too many people seem to want to do that (It's also funny when people have something up their and claim it's HD audio )

But Hulu does have a pretty good amount of influence and popularity but you may not see it in the gaming community. They do have some t.v. network support too which could go a long way. But right now I do wish they had a better selection of shows and kept older episodes.

Like you say, it would be suicidal if they stay the way they are now and they charged. However, if they provided a decent amount of HD content and had more shows and all, I would prefer to use that over super compressed video on youtube or other places. But that's just me. I hope in a few years video standards on youtube and much of these places go up. But also keep in mind I'm thinking of this being a cable/sat t.v. replacement which would end up being cheaper.

If I do recall wasn't there a planned On Demand service they were going to have with Hulu? I remember a Cox Cable(local cable company) commercial advertising it. But I never saw it. That may have helped it's popularity greatly.

Yeah I'm not entirely sure. But yeah we will have to wait and see if what they are planning is even worth subscribing too. Depending on what it will be, I may not even want to lol.

Torrents are our best friends. Today alone, I downloaded the latest Dollhouse and Stargate Universe episodes as well as the last two FlashForward ones... Who the hell needs Hulu to keep up with TV, anyway?
