I have a question...
-
Sunday, November 01, 2009 1:40 AM
What cable is used to connect a cable to a router? A cross over cable or a straight through? Every f*cking time I try to play borderlands, I constantly get signed out, no matter what. I have used DMZ on my ps3, I have turned media server connection off, I have port forwarded every f*cking port the instructions on portforward.com told me to forward for borderlands, and I've restarted and turned my router on and off about 10 f*cking times now, so I can only assume it's the problem of these sh*tty a** f*cking cables. Sorry for the language, but it's just really frustrating, I have this problem NON f*cking STOP with almost every game I want to play online. Hell I couldn't even play fat princess for the first 1 and a half months of owning it, and couldn't play warhawk. So anyways, those of you who know, which of those cables do I need to connect a modem to a router and which cable do I need to connect the ps3 to the router? I'm guessing I need a straight through for the modem to the router, and a cross over for the router to the ps3, is that right?

Well why not start with your service? What is it cable, phone or satellite?Ask them to do a signal test.If cable,I was recently having problems with mine, they had to replace the 35-odd year old cables right from the box 60 feet away from my house to all of them in the house, now I have an awesome connection. Then ,maybe replace all your ethernet cables to your puters and consoles. Just a suggestion.........

I'm confused.. mine is just a straight hookup form modem to router then ps3 is on wireless or cable, I use all ethernet cables. what kind of router do you have? I would suggest not getting a linksys, that is what i have and it drops the signal. or even your modem. Just go to walmart and buy both new and if they do not work then just take them both back? I never mess with port forwarding, I find it a hassle and a bit confusing.

@TMANX1 I don't think it's my service, because a lot of my games work, just a handful of them mess up most often. The ones that always seem to have had problems are Warhawk, Uncharted 2, and Fat Princess. All of the other games I tried online like cod waw, killzone 2, battlefield1943,badcompany, all worked, even when I found out I had a faulty cable the first time. They all worked with a FAULTY cable. I don't know WHY, but when I switched the cable out that one time, those games started working. I don't know why some games would work, but others wouldn't. It's really incredibly stupid that routers or psn or whatever allows a service to continue to work at only half of what it's supposed to do. It should just not work at all so it would be easier to troubleshoot when something goes wrong. But do you know what type of cable goes from the modem to the router (they are both ethernet cables by the way, straight through and cross over that is)? If you've never heard those terms then you probably won't be able to answer that particular question. But do you think that the line from the cable company (I use suddenlink cable internet by the way) would only allow certain things to work and not others?

But do you think that the line from the cable company (I use suddenlink cable internet by the way) would only allow certain things to work and not others? I have very similar problems. One way to troubleshoot is to connect your PS3 via a wired connection. This will take out any disconnection issues caused by the wireless. When I did this, I got fewer disconnections, but problems still persisted especially with voice chat. DMZ does a similar thing - fixes some problems, but others remain. I think the bottom line is that you have a dodgy internet conneciton. Maybe your ISP is blocking certain P2P applications. Maybe the cables are dodgy at some point down the line - some games handle lost packets better than others. It could be that your connection worsens when the network is under heavy stress (during peak times like when everyone gets home from work). Unfortunately I don't know what to recommend as my connection is still a bit dodgy... you may need someone to actually come round to test your connection. Perhaps some online diagnostic tools might help as well. The best solution in the end might be to wait until the internet in your area gets upgraded ;)

I guess I am just going to have to get on the phone with a customer service rep. It's like my ps3 hates borderlands online or something, because I can stay signed in on psn (after the first sign out and then re sign in) while playing borderlands, but when I go to "Online game" it stays at "checking for update data" and then signs me out. Sometimes if I ignore that and click online game again anyway, it will put me at the lobby, where I can invite my friends, but the one I want to invite that is currently playing borderlands, doesn't show up. I thought that they fixed that crap on their server side, but apparently there are still some bugs. And yeah, I would like to find out what protocols each game uses or how they handle lost packets as you say, so maybe I can find a work around.

I think it is your ISP.What are your internet speeds?I wonder if your ISP is throttling.Do you have normal, high or warp speed?Maybe run a speed test. http://www.speedtest.net/
