I want a nice 5.1 surround system. I'd prefer spakers with HDMI. Of course, since the PS3 has one HDMI output, what would I need to buy so that the HDMI puts out audio too? I'd prefer speakers from newegg if possible. And if I absolutely MUST have speakers with composite, I'll get them.

Im on a bugdet of 500 dollars. Maybe 600 if it's necessary. Its kinda sad that my surround system may cost more than my TV(26" 720p Vizio) but Im planning on upgrading that soon anyway.

Optical Cables, forgive my stupidity. Are those the cables that've been basically standard with speakers for years? I dont know, I'm tired... I worked 10 hours today

i think your missing something. Basically you would need something to power the speakers like a receiver. the optical cable or hdmi cable would connect your ps3 to the reciever. Optical only does sound. HDMI can do both sound and video, but if your reciever is only HDMI passthrough you can only do video, and then you could use optical for the sound.

by good speakers what do you mean? because you could drop more than 600 dollars for that BUT you can build it over time.

Though 600 dollars could get you a good home theater in a box(HTIB)

Edit: Were you thinknig you tv can power speakers? it might be able to. Some tv's can.

But yeah going for a higher up HTIB around 500 or 600 or building a system over time is what you would do.

I was thinking something PS3 > HDMI cable > reciever > HDMI to spakers & HDMI to TV

I looked at some HTIB but I dont want to spend money on a DVD player that I'm never going to use. Considering all the ones I've seen come with DVD players. I just want a 5.1 surround system. I dont really feel like building up over time.

well to be honest, a receiver that can decode hdmi 7.1 lossless sound is very very expensive.  Your best bet would be to get a good 5.1 surround sound receiver system, that you hook up via optical cable from the ps3 to the receiver.  You would still have to run the hdmi sound from the ps3 to the tv.  Onkyo has some decent home theatre in a box that is around 300 dollars.  Harmon Kardon is a step up from that, but its a little more expensive.  Denon has some good recievers, but you will have to buy your speakers separately, maybe som infinitys or polk, or boston acoustics.  Good luck in your search.

P.S. just to let you know, the hdmi or optical cable runs from the ps3 to the receiver.  These two types of cables carry the 5.1 or 7.1 sound (the 5 and 7 are the number of speakers, typically center channel speaker, two front speakers, and two rear speakers, with the .1 being for the subwoofer)  When the hdmi or optical get to the reciever, the receiver decodes and separates the different channels.  The speakers are connected to the receiver via those two wires, typically red and black.

I'd get one with an HDMI an optical cable can't even carry the bit rate required to run an SACD in 5.1 my SACD player has to run with analogue interconnects if you want the best quality go with an hdmi there very common in amps now.

alot of the cheaper recievers are only passthrough, though that is changing so he might be able to.

Hmm, i've never heard of reciever to speakers via HDMI.  That's a hell of a lot of HDMI.  I dunno if that even exists... or if it's nessecary.  My surround sound system is fine (console to reciever via optical, reciever to speakers via your average speaker wire).

Word to the Wise:

Optical connection won't get you uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1 sound.

You'll get standard surround in either Dolby Digital or DTS.

Only HDMI has the bandwidth for 7.1 LPCM or Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD Master Audio.

But Don't get me wrong....standard Dolby Digital and DTS are GREAT. It's just that LPCM, TrueHD, and DTS-HD are BETTER.
