Okay recently installed linux. Because I had specified my language and the computer realized when I installed GRUB that I had Windows Vista Installed, I clicked auto(As in Automatically find the boot for windows and use it) Now, however, it thinks that this "Memory Test" that Dell installed ( )is windows and boots that on startup. I am currently using Mandriva Linux to type this. I have located the boot file for English for Vista, but do not know how to edit GRUB to make it use it and not the "Memory Test". Thanks!

I think I need to change the root under grub(Yes I know how to get to grub at "/boot/grub/menu.lst") but I'm not sure. NEED HELP! Thanks.

That's brutal. You may have to do some digging on a techy message board to figure that one out.

My ex-girlfriend's PC was dual booting Ubuntu and XP. It crashed one day (under XP) and when she rebooted it said menu.lst was missing. She only had one HD and Ubuntu was sitting on a sort of virtual partition. Anyway it took me forever to fix it.

There should be some sort of partition editor that comes standard with Mandriva. If you open that up you'll be able to see what partition the memory test is installed to (hda0, hda1, etc) and which one has Windows. Then when you're editing menu.lst just make sure it defaults to the Windows partition and you should be good to go.

Hopefully that's helpful. If not, best of luck digging around the web for some answers. That's half the fun of running Linux.

As far as I know it all has to be set up from the start with the HD partitioned into 3 parts, with a linux boot loader on the third part which allows switching between the two and is contained on the Mandriva installation disc 1 or 2 (or the DVD).

I have two HDs one for mandriva, one for XP tho and my Mandriva is power pack 2006 so oviously it's been a very long time since I installed a duel boot and I can't really remember how it's done.

(I just can't bring myself to go to all the crap of moving all my files off the damn thing so I can install Mandriva 2008, that is just so long ).

try experimenting with the vista root in your grub list to see if you can get it to work e.g. (hd0,1)/(hd0,2) etc chances are that would be the source of the problem
