So, I'm getting tired of my 4-year old desktop PC (HP Pavilion a630n, for anyone interested), and have decided that the next best thing for me would be a personal laptop.

Now.......I have NO idea what specs I'd want. All I've been told is to make sure to get dual-core processor, but I don't know how powerful that should be.
More than that, I don't know what else to consider. Screensize really doesn't amtter. anywhere from 11.1 to 15.5 or whatever the standard is will be fine.
Price is.....somehow, not an object.
I was looking at some of the VAIO Series from Sony, and the ones that look hot have no specs.

And yes, on that note, I'd like to point out that this needs to look hot =D

Any and all help is very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Hmm well since it doesn't seem like you really care... Get a Dell. They have nice specs and Colour schemes. Currently I think Intels have the edge on mobile processors since they have lower power requirements. Also I believe the Duel Mobile Centrinos can scale the processor speed / power usage.

15.4" is the laptop standard. but you can get smaller 14.1s and larger 17" screens, but 14.1s cost a bit more and 17" are really expensive.

If you really don't want to spend money, get an Eee PC by ASUS.

Haha..I considered, then passed on the EeePC =)

By the way, what's an appropriate processor speed for someone that WON'T be using it heavily for PC gaming?
I don't need it to be extreme if I'll never make good use of it (I guess price IS somewhat a factor =p)!

Btw, ALIENWARE LOOKS SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICKKK!!!!

I just bought a new Macbook and I love it. The OS is seemingly flawless, fast, good memory. I'm glad i went with Apple.

Well you prob want some power.

I'm getting a macbook pro and am going to run either xp(preferably) or vista along side with it.

But 2 gigs of ram is good, i don't see why you would need more.

I was thinking of going with 4 gigs on my pro just for fun. Since my pc's motherboard and everything went,  I'm putting more into my macbook.

Ha! Wait until you try and do meaningful work with it.

If you're not using it for gaming, then anything over 1.6 Ghz is good. Remember, it's now less emphasis on speed and more so on cores. so it would be 1.6 x 2 for your speed if you got a duel core.

I have two VAIO's and have no problems. Just got my wife's a couple of months ago (CR4000 in cosmopolitan) and she loves it. We have all Sony stuff (PS3, camera, etc., etc.) and it works out with a lot of their integration. There is a slot for Memory PRO Duo so I can just pop the stick in there to export pics from the camera or import songs for my PSP. The only draw-back is Vista.

If I had my way though, I would replace everything with Macs. I loved my iMac soooo much and was very sad to sell it. Looking to get back to one soon.

I forgot to mention this but...
I'm SO not a fan of Macbooks, and I will never purchase one. =)

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

And..I'm not too fond of the Inspirons from Dell, either =\
Yeah, I'm picky =D!

Btw, Snoop, the Touch is the single greatest purchase I've made all my life. Haha. I absolutely LOVE it! =)!!!

Buying a Mac and running Windows on it is like buying a PS3 and only playing Playstation One games on it. yeah, you have a great piece of technology, but you are bastardizing it.

Oh i don't care. I'll be using both OS's a lot probably and i will have plenty of power.... I just hope that i buy xp before its off of shelves.

I heard you can use windows programs in OSX via a certian program, so i might just do that lol.

And if you're thinking Mac then you may want to wait a bit - I think the new macbooks will be revealed at the start of the 3rd quarter.

Hahaha, you can be waiting forever for Mac to come out with things. Every time something new comes out a better version is around the corner.

@GoLeafsGo

I would say if you like HP, stick with HP and get another one. My only beef is the glossy screen they put on it.

I'm not saying cripple yourself with waiting, I'm saying if you're looking to make an investment and you know the latest version is on the way, show some self-restraint.  Like a coworker of mine just bought an iPhone on a whim.  Wait till the 11th and you get 3g for less money!

Anyone else care to offer their opinion?

Btw, a dual-core processor at 1.33Ghz works as a 2.6Ghz? I ask because sometimes it's stated explicitly if its a 2.1, 2.2 and so on, but other times, you find these weak 1.33, or 1.1Ghz.

Just wanna know how it is =\
