After having it set in the corner for about a year, I've started working on the cabinet again.  (Lot's of honey-do's in the meantime)

I have the PC parts already, but I'm working on getting the console portion working first.

Basically this cabinet is a custom adaptation of a typical MAME.  The entire lower portion will house ~10-13 classic consoles that are all readily available to play as well as having a PC in the upper portion to play the thousands of arcade ROM's available via MAME.

I took some liberties that most MAME creators don't do.  First of all the choice of LCD screen allowed me to have the hookups necessary for HD systems if I chose to later include them, at the cost of not being able to play any light gun games such as duck hunt or hogan's alley.

The LCD screen also allowed for a lot more room in the cabinet itself, which is proving to be nice.

Let me know what you think so far and be honest and critique it well if you choose.  As I work on it I'll post updates, but don't expect them fast.  I'm an engineer that has a contractor job on the side as well as a wife and two small children to share time.

Anyways, it's a hobby that takes advantage of my gaming passion.

I love the idea. The consoles you're using are all very good ones, and the system looks like it could be a very nice addition to a game's room. I'd buy one. ^_^

Me and a buddy of mine were going to do this once, bu one major problem we ran into was the limitations of most keyboards. Most won't allow you to press more than 2 keys at a time, so for a player to press up + left + something else would be impossible if you were to solder your inputs to regular keyboard keys.

Of course the other option is to just buy a proper joypad, but that kind of takes the fun out of doing it yourself. Anyway it seems like a small problem, but it kind of killed the project for us.

As far as the keyboard is concerned.  I plan on using this.

It allows quite a few simultaneous inputs (56), and is reasonably priced and easy to install and run.

You might want to re-visit your project!

^^^^That's sweet. It solves the keyboard problem, but without making seem like you cheated and just bought a joystick. Hmmm...
