All this praise for MGS4 is making me damn anxious to play the game, but I am eager to play it, but also eager to get caught up on the first 3 (I know it may not be a necessity, but c'mon, I've barely touched any of the others). As you saw my other thread, I am planning on getting the 80 GB bundle and the Essential Collection also. My question to you fans who know the series is I've been reading that the MGS games, particularly the third are stripped of their extras and "full-ness", and it's a barebones story, without some extra modes I guess? Should I spend the extra $$ on seperate versions (ie: Subsistence etc...) because I'll miss out, or is it a good enough package as is to enter the MGS universe with the Essential Collection. Just don't want to miss out on some gaming brilliance in the coming weeks.

It is necessary.

It is an investment.

Some of those games aged BADLY (MG1 and MGS) (MG2,MGS2,3 and PO are perfectly playable).

And you have to invest some time and thought into thinking about some of the cutscenes.

If the Metal Gear world is one that interests you, than MGS4 is an epic send-off of a great series that may not appeal to everyone. Find a way to dip your toes before taking the plunge. If you like it, you're in for one of the best video game experiences you will ever find in your life.

the guy is pure nuts and I really dont even imagine a better game then mgs4.

to all mgs4 fans, its been a great experience sharing tears and sorrow in the mgs universe....

I thought MGS aged quite well, to be honest, it still features some of the best scenes in any videogame evar, even by today's standard.
The Twin Snakes remake for Gamecube ruined it, in my opinion.

Yeah BWS1982, I am in a similar position as you, I WANT to get MGS4 but due to the fact that I haven't even touched the previous titles, I am afraid that I will get confused while playing it. I have heard many times on this site that this game is highly story driven, and if I do not know the story I fear that it will hinder my experience for the game.

I've played only 1, 2, and 4. And MGS4 is really easy to connect to. The story is like a whole new episode in the franchise. You really don't need to play the other games to enjoy it.

It's still a good game, but things like the combat and firing system, and the general stealth mechanics, it all feels very limiting.

Sure, you can skips one of the game, but I've found that because I played all of them, I was able to understand the significance of every story detail and revelation.

Remember, it's all about the experience you have playing it, and to get the most out of it, you had to have played every game. Getting the most out of this game is worth it. It's the first game I'd ever give a 10 to.

I don't recommend playing all 3 part because it will take time and I think you will always think about MGS4, MGS4 will be in your mind while you are playing the other part, if you really want to play them I suggest you to play MGS1 only, then play MGS4, after you finish MGS4  if you want can go back to part 2and 3.(play them just for fun)t . Also put in your mind that MGS4 camera is really different than other 3.

Well, my main question isn't if I should play the other 3 games first (I plan to do that because I'm anal about stuff like that, it has to be sequential the way it was made)....my main concern is the different versions of the first 3....The Essential Collection just released contains all 3, but they are stripped of much of their extras and bonuses/modes, etc... I was told. So I didn't know if I should go for the Essential Collection, and just get through the base 3 games, or buy them all seperately (3 different purchases), and play them that way, because they had bonus content etc... Like Subsistence I heard has an extra disc with a bunch of stuff, and the MGS3 that's in "The Essential Collection" is void of this disc and content....so I'm wondering if the Essential Collection is truly the best way to go for the 3 of them.

Thanks for the replies.

MGS fans are the worst sort of fanboys on the entire planet. MGS is a retarded game with horrible lip syncing, poor A.I, poor textures, poor game play and is a movie not a game. If i wanted a good story i would watch a movie or read a book. Games don't need stories. They need game play. Nobody likes to watch cutscenes. Hideo Kojima is arrogant and doesn't deserve any recognition as a game creator. His attempts at bringing any cinematic experience in gaming are horrible. He should quit gaming completely and go into films where he will be mediocre.

MGS fans are the worst fanboys you can imagine. They are the epitome of ignorant blind fanboys and should all be thrown into a hole and blown up.
The world is ok with fanboys but not MGS fanboys.

I don't think you need the extra expansion versions. I only played the original MGS1 and 3 (didn't play 2...still on the shelf) and MGS4 is excellent just by that.

And in my opinion, you really only need to play 1 and 2. MGS 3, while it is my fav compared to 1, is all deep background stuff that explains 1 and 2; whereas 1 and 2 explains 4. Play MGS 3 just for fun, because it is HELLA epic. Play 1 and 2 for the MGS 4 references.

I want to play earlier MGS games (1 the most) but 1 is for PS1 right? ANd you need 2 discs from what I heard in MGS4... I can't rent MGS1 at video depot... I don't think they sell them anymore either...

I jumped right in without ever playing MGS before. I'm not lost in the fact games like Dark Sector and Timeshift have disjointed stories as do many other games. I pick up the parts I'm missing as I play. The story doesn't seem disjointed in MGS4.

I can honestly say it's the best game I have ever played. Good thing too. My console from Konami with shipping cost me $700.

No need for the collection, it's just fancy packaging, get them by themselves, search around on the net...

Second, with the 80GB bundle, playing 1-4, I must warn you to prepare for the most epic single player experience of your life...

Also, you might wanna grab ps1 mgs vr missions, mgs 2 subsistence and 3 subsistence, and mgs1, there's some other games I don't remember though...

There were more ps1 mgs's I think but I havn't played the ps1 mgs stuff since after the 1998-2000 which is when it all halted and I was on the dreamcast ps2 stuff...

Can someone just go over the key features of MGS4. Like what are the cool features of this game. I only played the first Metal Gear Solid on the PS and I loved the hard and intense boss fights and the stealth action.

wow..where do i start.

Octocamo: whole body is camo against a background when you are taking cover or lying on the ground.
Camera: instead of over the top, it's 3rd person shooter camera, with first person available (like Call of Duty 4's sight view)
Different paths: you can choose whichever path you want to go from point A to point B or to accomplish different tasks. This means that you can be stealthy or all out action.
MK II: this is great. it's a remote controlled robot that you can use to scout ahead and shock unsuspecting soldiers.
Take Sides: you can now help the terrorists during battle to gain trust and they'll help you during battles too.
New Movement: instead of just crawl, now you get slow "humping" crawl that's harder for enemy to detect, and you can flip over so you are facing up when you crawl. You can also crouch run, which is useful.
Eye Patch: you can use it to see during dark or invisible stuff (hint hint). Also it's a binocular. It can also point out enemy from friend and valuable items lying around the battlefield.
Psych/Stress: the higher your psych, the faster you regen health. The more stress, the lower your psych. You get stress from doing battles.
Drebin: it's a weapon shop that lets you purchase items/weapons and ammo. You get Drebin "credit" by collecting weapons dropped by downed enemies.
Gun customization: you can now customize your guns
Raiden: raiden is all badass now.
Vehicle sections: Brilliant. It's not just mindly stuff, you actually have to complete different objectives during these sections (including CQC).
Tin Can: in addition to the box, you get a tin can. It also acts as a weapon.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all i can think of right now.
