Mods - Thursday, August 07, 2008 9:30 PM
This thread is for recommending mods for other games to everyone. When recommending a mod, please give some details as to what the mod is, the requirements needed to run it, picture or a few pictures of this mod are needed so people can see what its about and a link to the site. Before I start, just incase people do not know what a mod is, let wikipedia help you on this one:

Mod (computer gaming)

Mod or modification is a term generally applied to computer games, especially first-person shooters, RPGs and real-time strategy games. Mods are made by the general public or a developer, and can be entirely new games in themselves. They can include new items, weapons, characters, enemies, models, textures, levels, story lines, music, and game modes. They also usually take place in unique locations. They can be single-player or multiplayer. Mods that add new content to the underlying game are often called partial conversions, while mods that create an entirely new game are called total conversions.
Games running on a PC are often designed with change in mind, and this consequently allows modern computer games to be modified by gamers without much difficulty. These mods can add extra replay value and interest. The Internet provides an inexpensive medium to promote and distribute mods, and they have become an increasingly important factor in the commercial success of some games. Developers such as id Software, Valve Software, Bethesda Softworks, Crytek, Relic Entertainment and Epic Games provide extensive tools and documentation to assist mod makers, leveraging the potential success brought in by a popular mod like Counter-Strike.

Now that you know what a mod is let me start with these two mods below:

Name: Sourceforts
Engine Used: Source Engine
Website: http://www.sourcefortsmod.com/index.php
Requirements for this mod:
  • Minimum: 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, DirectX 7 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection
  • Recommended: 2.4 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection
  • Steam Account is also required, get it from here: http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=about&cc=GB

Other Information:

SourceForts is a Half Life 2: Deathmatch mod where Combine and Rebels face off in capture-the-flag action with a big twist. Players build bases and other structures with blocks and plates in the "build phase" to protect themselves and their team's flag (which is actually a ball), and then fight it out and try to capture the enemy's flag in the "combat phase". Once the combat phase has ended, it's back to build, where players can repair, improve, and change their creations to ready them for the next combat phase.

Name: Zombie Master
Engine Used: Source Engine
Website: http://www.zombiemaster.org/
Requirements for this mod:
  • Minimum: 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, DirectX 7 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection
  • Recommended: 2.4 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection
  • Steam Account is also required, get it from here: http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=about&cc=GB
Other Information:

Zombie Master is a multiplayer Half-Life 2 modification, centred around a zombie-apocalypse, which throws all but one player in the shoes of human survivors. Pitched against a relentless tide of rotting flesh, they must scavenge for weaponry and equipment just to stay alive. But that one player, chosen randomly at the beginning of the round, is not bound by mortal restraints.
To speak his name is to invite the wrath of hell - but most call him the 'Zombie Master'. He is nigh omnipotent. His invisible hand controls the legions of undead like puppets on strings; slowly closing the net on the humans while they run to and fro like rats in a maze.

I was expecting another one of those threads where angry members rip on the mods for some BS reason.

While I'm here, I was playing UT3 once on some clan server and they were using a mod that sped the game up to PC speed and upped the fire rate of all the weapons by at least twice as much. Anyone know what it's caled?

RE: Mods - Wednesday, August 27, 2008 2:26 PM
Another mod using the Source engine.

Name: Ham and Jam
Engine Used: Source Engine
Website:http://www.hamandjam.org/
Requirements for this mod:
  • Minimum: 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, DirectX 7 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection
  • Recommended: 2.4 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection
  • Steam Account is also required, get it from here: http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=about&cc=GB
Other Information:

Ham and Jam started out as an idea between it’s two main developers as an alternative to the tired old “U.S./Russia vs. Germany, post June 6th 1944″ formulae WW2 games seem to use. Fed-up with everything prior to D-Day being ignored, the North West Europe theatre and the lack of British, Commonwealth and Free Forces they decided to do something about it…

The goal was clear - to make a WW2 mod that featured all the “missing” bits of WW2 history, portray it in a historically accurate way but without detracting from the fun or playability by overdoing realism. In short the kind of game they and their friends would like to play. Rather than a deathmatch gameplay style, Ham and Jam is all about teamwork as were the real battles. Each map is set-out with objectives and as a team you must fight to complete them to win.

From the start, Ham and Jam has had an interesting development ethos. First of all, there is no real “team”, only a few core “leaders” and everyone else is a contributor free to add whatever they like. There is no commitment to the mod full time - you can choose to work on it for a month, a week or simply donate a few textures and leave, it’s entirely up to you. Also we follow a strict policy of “No Bullshots” - we will only post pictures of things that actually exist or are about to go into the game.

Geeze, Zone, great idea! I fully support the recommendation for the SourceForts Mod. It's incredibly fun, and breathes new life into the Half-Life 2 multiplayer. But I didn't know about the Zombie Master Mod - that sounds just as fun. I think I might actually just buy Half-Life 2 for these Mods.

Buy the Orange Box you get 5 games for pretty cheap plus I think you also get Counter Strike Source and free Half Life 2 Deathmatch plus Source SDK (to make maps/models etc) and Source SDK Base.

*nodnod* I'll be getting it in no time, then.  Just need to double check my laptop will be able to handle it.

The minimum processor req. is 1.7Ghz processor. That's fine, 'cause I have a 1.7Ghz Dual Core. Needs 512Mb RAM. That's fine, 'cause I have 2GB. A 128Mb Graphics Card. I think I have something like a 356Mb Shared Memory Graphics card. And the HDD space is no problem... Seems fine to me.

Dead Before Dawn - Cahpter 2 (Left 4 Dead custom map)

Dead Before Dawn is the work in progress campaign also known as Crossroads Mall.
If this is the first time you have heard of it then you have missed out on a lot. It was originally created for the HL2 Mod: No More Room in Hell. A few weeks ago, I contacted the creator, Darth_Brush, to find out if he was planning on porting it to Left 4 Dead. Since that day, Darth_Brush and a hand selected few community members have been working on it non-stop. With no SDK for Left 4 Dead yet, we are forced to work on the campaign using the HL2 Source engine. At first we wanted to use the Crossroads Mall for a large map but we have decided to create a full campaign from it. The idea behind the campaign is to recreate as many scenes from the movie it was inspired from, Dawn of the Dead (2004).
As players explore the campaign, in each chapter they will notice distinct locations from the movie. These locations and many more easter eggs are being implemented as we speak. So many things have changed or have been added to the campaign that I thought it neccessary to record a new video to show chapter 2 and what we plan on doing with it.
Simply playing in the mall just won't cut it. So, we decided to add some puzzles and obstacles to it. Around every corner, you will have to fight hordes, avoid traps, disable security and a few other things. This video is merely a teaser and is in no way near the final product. There are a lot of things that still needs to be added to the campaign and we will make sure that this campaign is near perfect before we release it.
Please note that this campaign is a Work In Progress and still needs a lot of attention. For instance, the lighting. Compiling a map with proper lighting takes forever and this will be done at the very last. Other things you will notice are HL2 props and textures. Once we have our hands on the Left 4 Dead SDK, these things will be fixed.

The devs are working on a 1.9.5. as an update to 1.9.4. to fix some stuff and maybe add few things. They are also working on Sourceforts 2.0. which will be a total conversion.
