Well for Bioshock, it became the game that showed the flaws in games that claim to have choices, but in reality we are being constrained down a path, it just gives the illusion of freedom
Gears influenced the most with the 2 player co-op online, just look at Halo 3, Army of Two, Haze, and Halo Wars. And the Coversystem is being used everywhere, just look at Army of Two, Killzone 2, and GTA4

Bioshock....Fable. You arent constrained to a path. You could be bad, good, or somewhere down the middle. And just like Bioshock, it lead to the same ending.

Gears....Killswitch. It used a cover system. And co-op online was coming no matter what...lol...its not innovation when other companies are doing the same, but Gears just happened to come out 2 months earlier.

So far GTA IV (*). The way the environment reacts around you and the vastness of the city itself. It's not easy picking any game since most are cookie cutter.

(*) Disclaimer. Before I get trashed for saying GTA IV at least I didn't say Madden 08.

For one, the thread asked the most influential THIS generation. Second, Fable gave you a certain degree of freedom , while Bioshock gives the illusion of freedom, but your being lead down a path, that makes your moral choices redundant. Three, It is innovation if they are first do online co-op (on consoles), I think that is the definition.

it says this generation. i'd have to say WoW

PC games don't have a "generation".  Hell, WoW came out 3 years ago.  If PC had generations, we'd be changing gens every 6 months *at the max*

5 months ago I would have said GTA4, before even playing the game... but now that I have, that really hasn't done much.  Hell, from what I hear it has less to do than previous GTA games.

All in all, from what I've played I'd pick CoD4.  Granted, it could be a lot better... but I think it will help to make console FPSs much better in terms of both offline and online.

Rock Band would be another choice.  Hell, look at what they are already doing with GH4... a compelte copy of it.  Ok... they added the ability to make your own songs, but rock band was touting that as a possible feature a long time ago.  GH4 just picked up the pieces.  Rock Band has definately influenced the rhythm genre.

I would say Gears of War as well, regardless if it was done in a ****ty game, Gears is what kick started every game using the cover system

On a personal level, that game will be out in 2 days. As far as the industry is concerned I'd probably say Kill.Switch. Even though Winback (albeit copying Metal Gear at the time) and Blackthorne did the cover system first, Kill.Switch was the major turning point for using it as the main gameplay feature. After that, Gears aped it now how many games have cover systems now?

This gen? the Gears influence is definitely there.

However, I'll say Crackdown.

Yes, I'm being honest.
