PS3 COMPATIBLE.

N4G does indeed work on the PS3 although there are some problems every now and then.

Last year when the PS3 was a life saver for me when I didn't have a working comp, I was privy to a key issue (this was during the late spring/early summer months): I couldn't log in. I would put my name and password in there to log into the account, but when I clicked login, it went back to the main page but didn't say I was logged in because I wasn't. Haven't tried it since I got my comp back, but I could see if this was fixed later on.

As for another suggestion, how about a bubble level meter (along with the list of who did what to your bubbles), to show how much more you have until you get another comment bubble (or how low you would still have to be popped before your go from 5 bubbles to 4). It would help to know if you're doing something right and do just enough more to put yourself over the top to the next bubble level, or to know if you should be careful. Only that account would have access to that particular bubble meter (no one else would be able to actually see it).

Furthermore, another idea I just now thought about (not sure if this has been done already, but if it isn't...): Have it where the more bubbles you have, the more impact your actions on another's bubbles will have on their actual bubble count. Like, you might only be able to barely move the needle on one's bubble count if you only have one bubble, but you'll be able to nearly send someone from nearly getting 6 bubbles to them having only 4 if you have the full 10 bubbles. To keep abuse from happening, the more bubbles the other person has, the less damage you can do to them (like, if you have 10 bubbles but the person you're trying to drop has 9, you wouldn't be able to do as much to him than if he had 4 or 3 bubbles, in which case, you could really do a number on the bubbles). Might be a thought.

A Major Improvement to This Site: Notification of follow-up comments. - Monday, February 16, 2009 3:25 PM
I hate it when i comment and i won't know if someone responded unless i go to that atricle and check myself. If there was some  sort of system that notifies you of follow up comments to a comment that you made.

Example:
someone posts 1
next person posts 1.1
I post 1.2
Someone else posts 1.3 and i get notified.
next person posts 1.4 and i get notified
and so on

OR

i post 1
someone else posts 1.1 and i get notified
someone else posts 1.2 and i get notified
and so on

The flash forum comment thing is crap, i prefered it when a new window opened then you could type your comment there.

Act harder on fanboys. Permban people. The news section is a cesspool of fanboys. Even some the news is "written" by fanboys like Hiphopgamer. What is the blog section for? It might get you hits right now but in the long run it's ruining the site.

More organization would be helpful, I think.  This is not a critique just a few suggestions that would make sorting through the news easier.

The front page does not need to be inundated with reviews.  Make a review section since most people will be looking for reviews when they want to read them not just because they're there and keep them off the front page.

There should also be an opinion piece (read blogpost/editorial) section.  Does everyone really have to know about 'userx' and his broken console?  Or why 'systemx' is "doomed to teh b3 horribles LOL"?  Only the really good ones should hit the front page.

Further along with the added channels, make a certain percentage of the front page reserved for each channel.  3 each from Xbox, PS3, Gaming, 1 from Editorials and Tech, 1 from Industry etc.  The reason for this is, while you may be interested in reading news about everything, you shouldn't have to read through 3 pages of reviews and flamebait blog posts to get to the other good articles.  That and because a few of the channels are less popular really cool Tech news often gets swallowed by the latest 4 Reviews of the same game and HHG-like flamebait articles.

Lastly, when posting Reviews have the site "auto-name" the article to keep it from getting ugly.  For example: "GamesiteX:Mahjong:Deluxe 2 Review".
When submitting the review have fields for:
1)ite name
2) site score (or N/A)
3) game name
4) expansion (Y/N ?).

Then it could be generated:

GamesiteX's Review of "Mahjong:Deluxe 2" (replace the quotation marks with underline, italicsor whatever).  It would make it easier to navigate them, give some uniformity to them and increase the level of quality of the site.

If I'm being too forward in my suggestions feel free to PM me.

T?he student room has some really good forum features which would be great to add. The best feature is that there is a box, like the "active threads" and "new threads" boxes on n4g", which is called "who quoted me" and it would tell you which threads you have been quoted in and when.

I agree, with an earlier poster that the search engine does a great job and it can be a great tool. But there have been many times searching for dupes before posting, that nothing has come up and after posting an article, 0 minutes later there are 10 reports citing a dupe.

This has happened to me on a few occasions (today being one of them) and others I work or associate with on other gaming sites who have noticed the same thing.

Dunno if it can be fine tuned a bit more or not, but that would help those who submit articles loads. :-)

RE: a few ideas - Wednesday, August 19, 2009 10:58 PM

  • Front page needs filters be it through tags or just consoles (Tags: Halo, Gears, Xbox 360; Consoles: Xbox 360).
    • Reason: I seriously don't care that Halo 3 is releasing its 10th expansion pack this year so why should it be on my front page?
  • Enough reports on an article needs to get taken down and have an admin review it.
    • Reason: A flamebait article today titled, "Slimmed PS3 won't save Sony." Most of this stuff that hits the front page is an opinion of someone from N4G that created their first blogger.com account, typed it up, gave it a flamebait article, and sent it in for the bots/droids/tards to approve it up.
  • Redo Games Index, Combine VG Releases / N4G, and Games Wiki.
    • Reason: Alright, this is going to be a long one to type:  Firstly, redo the Games Index - have you seen it lately? There's like four different Uncharted 2s on there, lol.  Just have the algorithm jump through the words and if it sees a match with a previous title, add a suggestion, "Did you mean this title?" If it's a new game, then this is where VG Releases / N4G and Games Wiki combo comes in.  If they decide to create a new title, have them make a wiki page of the Game.  Include the Title, Description, Platform, and date (now you see what I'm getting at?).  Draw the date from VG Releases database, and just abandon VG releases altogether.  One this game wiki is added, it will be currently added onto the list for x amount of days  until an admin can approve the game wiki. If an admin does not approve or fails to see the game added to the index, it will be wiped off the list.
I'll probably add more to this later, but I believe these could help N4G a whole lot.  Oh yeah, throw in an Apple and Retro section.

1) MORE MODS

the rampant fanboyism has gotten to an extreme point in the gamerzone. too much filth and rants have been promoted in the gamerzone as of late.

2) A WAY TO ELIMINATE MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS

it has become apparent that some people have been giving themselves bubbles and make multiple accounts to start flamewars and trolling.

3) A FASTER WAY TO REMOVE BAD ARTICLES

i have witnessed flamebait articles make it all the way to 800 + degrees before a mod notices and removes the articles.

perhaps a way for regular users who have a certain rank (and have been approved by mods themselves) to vote in the removal of bad articles. sorta like cleaners. perhaps certain ones dedicated to specific sections.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I just want to assure you all that we read all the feedback posted here. I know it may seem like we don't do any thing about the problems reported but we are very much aware of most of the issues our users have with how the site works. As I have stated before the reason any updates haven't been rolled out yet is that for the last 12 months we have been working day and night rebuilding and coding the new N4G site from scratch. Doing updates to the current version of the site will only further delay the launch of the new site. So again your feedback, suggestions and ideas are still very much welcome.

Re:N4G Next Update Suggestions - Saturday, September 26, 2009 12:59 PM
The comments section needs to be redone a bit. It's way too clunky and too bulky. I think it should have collapsible replies so that people just don't post their own comment on the first comment, even if it's not even relevant to the comment, just to get their opinion seen rather than posting and then getting it shoved to the third page. I've also noticed that clicking the agree or disagree button often bumps you up to the top of the page, and then you have to go searching through the comments again to go find where you were. It would also be nice if you didn't have to reload the entire page just to show a hidden comment. And wouldn't it be easier to put xbot, playslave, M$, Micro$oft, $ony, etc. on the censored list of words posted in the gamerzone (similar to what is done with swear words on the comments section).

Obviously the filter needs some more work (HHG isn't being filtered anymore). I suggested to Cat that it would be nice for the heat on stories with reports of bad editing, or wrong source, to elevate more slowly or not at all being that I have the feeling that some users purposely use the wrong source or incorrect title to get more hits for the story before they have to change it. Although of course this could be abused but you could create a challenge system for these specific reports where a certain number of users would have to challenge and then the heat suppressor would be removed. Obviously this was kind of a quick thought so if it was implemented it would need some more fine tuning and forethought of how it could possibly be abused etc.

More mods on the front page is definitely a must as the gamerzone is not serving as what it was designed to be. Their should be a report for "Report a comment" as "fanboy comment" as it is unclear what to report a fanboy as; Spam? Off-topic? Offensive? Most fanboy comments don't really fit into any of these as most are on-topic, aren't spam as they aren't advertising something, and although it could be considered somewhat offensive, they usually aren't insulting a specific user, more of just flaming Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo.

The heat system could use a bit of retouching.
A. It's much too easy for stories to heat up. It's said that 1000+ is reserved for something megaton but it is often more reserved for controversial articles. Of course fixing something like this might be impractical without putting a heat limit on articles or having a perfect filter (which of course won't happen as it is impossible
B. I think it needs more colors added for better differentiation of degrees.

Ex. All stories start off at light blue, once they reach 70 degrees they turn blue, 100 they turn light yellow,  250 yellow, 500 light red, 1000 red or something to that extent. It just doesn't really make sense that 100 degrees+ is all the same color.

Finishing here because the outdent isn't quite working. As someone stated it would be nice to have a specific section for reviews so that the front page doesn't get completely inundated with reviews when big name games come out. I also like Funky Bunch's review generator idea.

DITTO ON NEW REPORT CATEGORIES:

i think "flamebait" should be added to the report categories.

also

MAINPAGE MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATOR REGARDING RULES:

it would be nice if administrators or mods were to have a CLEARLY visible message maybe on top of main webpage or inside an article stating things like "any comments not relating to the subject at hand or with flamebait tendencies WILL be moderated:

perhaps i would like a daily remined in big bold letters when i enter the main webpage that says NO MORE AMAZON BASED ARTICLES

Something must seriously be done with this bubble system. When you start to feel that you can no longer even speak your mind about things in fear that your bubbles will be taken from you for being against, that is just ridiculous. I'm not saying PS3 fanboys run the site or they are the problem or anything but its like if you arent with them you need to be oppressed. Why did I just have 7 bubbles...made a recent comment about how Cry Engine 3 should be great...and now I'm back to 6? Wtf?

Could you add a "Go to Last Post" button in the right column of the forums (The one labled "Active Threads")for each thread?  Sorry if this thread is just for the main site.
