IBM creates new supercomputer with Cell processor
Posted Jun 9th 2008 7:00PM by Andrew Yoon
Filed under: News
The Cell processor, known as the heart of the PS3, is being used every day in rather extraordinary situations. IBM has crafted yet another supercomputer, codenamed Roadrunner, which runs at a record-setting petaflop speed. (A petaflop is the equivalent of one thousand trillion calculations per second.) This speed makes Roadrunner twice as fast as the previous best supercomputer.

"We are getting closer to simulating the real world," Bijan Davari, vice president of next generation computing systems at IBM, told BBC News. The computer will be installed in a US government laboratory to monitor the US nuclear stockpile. It will also be used for research into astronomy, genomics and climate change.

The Roadrunner will use less than 20,000 chips, and will use a hybrid design of both conventional supercomputer chips, and PS3's Cell processor. The next design by IBM will be nicknamed "Skynet."

What they need to do is simulate (I didn't say stimulate although that's good too) the human body and then test medications virtually on the system. Far better than giving a rat 1000X the normal human dose of something and declaring everything carcinogenic.

It seems that the cell is pretty amazing for crunching numbers and processing video. It does not seem to be the that good for a game console processor. It has caused the ps3 lots of hardache especially in its early life due to devs not knowing how to optimize for it. I espect all next gen consoles to have multi core processors and abandoning the cell.

Early in the PS3's lifespan. I would agree if that holds true in a year or two from now.

I'm not too sure. Maybe we should ask Naughty Dog, Insomniac or Guerilla about that

We're in agreement, then. I honestly don't think that there's a processor in existence that fits the profile of what socomnick is describing. The Cell can't just be amazing at everything else, and be crap at gaming, it doesn't work like that.
