I don't have my PS3 yet (the MGS4 80 GB bundles are sold out). I was able to secure a copy of the original Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (which says it has Knights of the Nine on the back) but it's NOT the GOTY edition that has Shivering Isles with it as well. I bought it because it was only $15 on clearance (GOTY edition was still $60), and figured even though it's not the full amount of content, the bang for the buck it offers was too good to pass up. Am I going to miss much without Shivering Isles, or can I later buy that on the PSN store or something?

The game itself should do you well.  I thought the expansion was in the PSN store but I'm not sure and no way of check till a few hours.  Sorry but yeah you still have the brunt of the game for sure

You won't miss it. To actually "complete" Oblivion, you're looking at about 200 hours or so, and 15 hours for what is essentially just a lot of weirdness and a couple of extras, isn't something you'll really miss.

Took me around 145 hours and I finally ran out of missions. There may be a couple of sidequests that I missed, but I can't find anything anywhere. The expansion looks interesting. I was going to trade in my copy of Oblivion and maybe The Darkness (worst game ever) for an Oblivion game of the year edition, but my character is stupidly powerful now. I just don't see it being any challenge.

So yaa, for a difference of $40 I'd say you made the right decision buying the normal one. You'll get plenty of gameplay out of it.

edit: Besides, before you're even done with Oblivion, Fallout 3 will be out.

Well, 145 hours then, whatever...

It'll keep him amused 'til then, at least. And, since 85.24068276% of all games nowadays last 4 hours, it'll be a nice change of pace, and well worth the money.

Although, I thought Oblivion wasn't that great, when compared to Morrowind. It's just too casual for me, whereas the other games in the series were actually really deep and enthralling. But, I'm just a jaded fan of old crap, so ignore me.

Morrowind was unquestionably better than Oblivion. Except for not having horses. Even Daggerfall had horses.

Shivering Isles IS on the PS Store, at least in North America, I guarantee you that, I got it when I had Oblivion and its a 1.7GB download that costs I believe, $29.99.

And there was no fast travel. Although, I felt that making sure you have enough supplies and equipment for the journey sort of added to the strategy of the game, and, of course, the longevity.

I remember once in Morrowind I got stuck in a guard tower and had to jump in there for a little over a half an hour till I leveled my jump high enough to get out of there.  lol good times good times

This probably belongs in another thread, but I liked the enchanting system a lot better in Morrowind too. I made myself some nice constant effect bound armour and weapons by the end of that game. Even went and killed that foating god character. After he was dead I got a message saying that I had done a terrible thing and I would have to go living in this cursed world alone. Lol.

Yeah, the usage of spells was far better in Morrowind, and actually presented you with more of a tactical advantage than in Oblivion, in which a decent swordsman is unstoppable as long as he keeps levelling up. I suppose they were catering more to the casuals, which is nice in that it gets more people hooked, but... I think the real hardcore players felt a little dumped on. But, it's not that bad. At the end of the day, it's still a decent, well-made game.

And LOL @ PS360WII.

That's why an Elder Scrolls MMO would suck. All the new players would be jumping everywhere they go to up they're acrobatics skill. It would look silly. You could spot noobs because they'd be standing in one spot summoning zombies and shooting arrows at them to up they're archery skill. Then when the zombie got pissed they'd stand there and let it hit them to up they're block skill. Then they'd heal up with a healing spell to help with they're magic. Actually that would be kind of funny to watch.

Thanks guys for the replies, good to know I've got an awesome product as is. I'll have to look into Shivering Isles later if possible to add that to my experience.

Oblivion is an insult to The Elder's Scrolls series.

Right. Clearly we should all still be playing Arena. Maybe we could go back and invest another 200 hours in Morrowind.

i bought into the review scores and awards and after 10 hours of boredom i quickly traded it in for Virtua Tennis
15 extra hours of it and i would have committed suicide.

you're good to go without the GotY version unless you really love the game then you'd want more i suppose.
