I know some of you might be getting tired of me but bear with me for this one:

what is the main problem that people have to deal with on N4G? bad articles being approved.

what i mean by bad articles, is flamebait articles or fanboy articles or just completely useless articles.

now someone might have approved an article which wasn't up to snuff because they thought it was good in their eyes, and that's nothing. fine, the article get deleted, no big deal.

but then you have articles like these : http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/News-155967.aspx

an article submitted based on a comment on a blog, and you have to wonder about the people who approved these articles. only people who read the rules and passed the contributor test can approve articles, so how does something so basic get through? 5 people can't be that thick-headed to not know the rules, since supposedly they all passed the test right?

unless some of those are the same people with the same account, it still brings up a major issue. usually the people approving the garbage flaming articles are the same individuals (not gonna name any names to avoid hazzles, but you can guess) . when the topic gets closed and failed, a lot of them are left unscathed to either submit more garbage articles or approve some.

Now i understand that once in a while you yourself can submit a bad article and it gets failed, since we are all humans. But when you have the same group of people CONSTANTLY bringing down the quality of the site, and still account for 2 points of approval, something has GOT to be done. either take a way their approval points, temporary contributor ban, or SOMETHING.

It's hard because any metric you use will be abused by the fanboy type.

If I mark down flamebait like you said, that's a valid use of such a system. But what if a person just doesn't like the good or bad news about a system? I guarantee you a content rating system like that would be abused. So, in the end, you'd have parity, because the accurate (but unpopular) news would be voted down just as much as the flamebait.

It's a problem with all user-generated content sites. Just means that you're going to have to sort thru a ton of garbage to find the good news that the site does frequently produce.
