Well i am looking to upgrade my HDTV. I am looking to get either a 42inch plasma or a 42inch LCD.

The 42in Plasma i want to get only runs at 720p which is fine for me since majority of the games i play run at 720p. The LCD however goes all the way to 1080p. I have no clue which is better between the two but the image on the plasma seemed better to me. Any advice

Plasma does have a somewhat clearer picture than most LCDs, however i would get the 42" LCD because of the fact it can go all the way up to 1080p.

However, it depends on the cost. If the LCD one cost about the same as the Plasma one you are looking at, then get the Plasma. Otherwise if the plasma is way cheaper, go for that one.

I have myself a 42" LCD 1080p Sony....and its just amazing!!!

LCD.

Plasma sets run the risk of image burn, a potentially serious problem that can occur with frequent video game use. There's usually little difference between the two when it comes to price, so that's not really a factor (generally speaking). I own an LCD just for my 360, and the picture and audio quality (via HDMI) are spectacular.

I have a 42 In Plasma from Samsung (720P) and a 46 In Projection form Sony (1080P). If i ran both T.V.'s side by side the plasma would look slightly better in 720P but in 1080P theres no contest. For the first 100 Hrs of a plasma life it need to be trained keeping the brightness down and such and youll have no problems with burn in what so ever.

Most plasmas come with anti-burn-in technology (whatever it's called).
So, if your only reason for purchasing an LCD is because plasmas experience burn-ins, rethink your decision.

Honestly speaking, you can't go wrong with either.
I had the same problem some odd motnhs back, and ending up with a 46" Samsung LCD.
I've never looked back.

LCD.

The technology is older therefore more reliable.

Plasma is highly inefficient. If your house is generally cold, plasma will help to warm up the room.

LCD at 1080p is guaranteed to look amazing for the lifespan of the HDTV, which, and I may be mistaken, lasts many hours longer than a plasma lifespan.

if you own a ps3 and often play blu-rays then mabye a 1080p would be ideal, but if your only buying it for gaming then a 1080i or 720p is fine, i have a 42" 1080i lcd acer and its great for gaming. and still pretty sweet with blu-rays too

Never owned a plasma, but I do have a 47in 1080p LCD TV, and the picture quality is amazing.  I highly recommend it, with the ambilight feature if you can afford it.

So what are you gonna buy? Give us a link or somthing so we can see the model...
I am going to head to Ultimate Electronics soon myself... Im partial to the aqous and bravia brands...
One thing that everyone should consider when buying these HDTV's is how many ports does it have for hdmi vga dvi component etc etc... Cause my TV fell short of my needs and I had to buy switches which lowers quality and of course all the ports were in the worse place possible!

Go with your Gut buy the one that your eyes like the Most

A I would recommend getting a TV that cost a lot online. I saved almost $1000 over going to Best Buy and had a trouble free delivery to my door.

Depending on room conditions or unless you are absolutely sold on hanging the TV on the wall I wouldn't overlook DLP's you can get a monster size with an incredible picture for a cheaper price. Plus if you get the LED powered Samsung the "Rainbow effect" that happened in some DLP's is no longer there. Plus with the LED tech you no longer have to replace the bulb.

I love my TV and would recommend it to anybody.

Go with the LCD man. I have a 1080p 42" Westinghouse that runs great.

Never been disappointed with the LCD... so I say go for it, and screw the Plasma (that are prone to failure).

Syko360 - I have an older DLP projector. You can see the rainbow effect ONLY if you look for it, and it's pretty freaky. Although Sin City is a bw movie, you wouldn't believe the colours it gives off, but again, you have to intentionally and actively look for them.

I feel really sorry for people who suffer from the effect without effort.

Why not wait a little?

But you are already aware of that.
OLED screens could also be a nice alternative, but they are limited in terms of size.

its not really worth getting a OLED screen yet....isnt the only one on the market the 11" sony one? And that alone is like 2 grand..if there are any other ones out there that are bigger, they would be EXTREMELY expensive. It might take a while until OLED's go down in price.

My fam has a 1080p 40" sony bravia V series with a 13,000:1 contrast ratio and now its probably running about $1700? Maybe less now

The DLP is also a good choice, if you have a dark room like the samsung one syko has, maybe a little smaller.

I don't know if you want to get a vizio though...they are cheaper but if say you were getting a 60" vizio...i would go with a smaller HD set from sony, samsung, or sharp for about the same price(maybe around 42 inches? I figure a 60" inch vizio = a 42 inch sony, sammy or sharp HD set in price, maybe not), or go with a dlp. Ive never been too impressed with vizio or westinghouse for that matter(supposedly been well known to have defects as well with certain models, though probably most have been solved). but thats me.

I'm not really partial to brands. 2 HDMI ports are all i really need. I am going to wait till may for the price drops to fall thru. I will be looking at all the brands closely but at the end of the day its the picture quality that matters most.
