yea i got it for $1600 Canadian from Future Shop. The reason i went for a laptop over a desktop was because i'm going away to university in a year and this way i can game on my computer and take it to class with me.

Good enough reasons for getting one, I s'pose. Laptops generally aren't good gaming machines, yet they're far more versatile than desktops. I move around too much for a desktop - I could never imagine sitting on a chair for hours without end on MSN and here. So I wander around the place with my laptop, so I can chat while cooking or whatever. :D

The UK is such a total rip off...

17" screen
Intel T5750 Core 2 Duo Mobile @ 2.40GHz
4GB DDR2 667MHz Memory
Nvidia 8800M GTX 512mb PCI Express Graphics
160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

Equivalent of C$2,329.91.

SO thats why you were searching for laptops.

You should move to Canada or America then xD. We actually get deals on some things.

Typically things are priced the same just in different currencies. Hency why a UK laptop seems to cost more. If she wanted a cheap one she'd have to smuggle it into the UK bought from afar or get one off of ebay and hope to dodge customs. Or have a relative from Canada buy her one and bring it over on a visit (I say Canada becasue getting laptops through Americian Airports is a bitch)
Push it to pop it!
Rock it to lock it!
Break it to make it!

The only thing the latter is missing is a sound card and wireless thingy. Any ideas on which to go for?

So... My own build, or a prebuilt one?

Zoostorm = do not get.

DIY system = very good choices.

You don't need a soundcard, just go with the Integrated Audio**. It should be 8-channel Hi-Def. I never get sound cards...it's a waste unless you have one of those $400 sound systems. As for WiFi, I personally have my system wired, if you absolutely cannot do that just look for any decent wireless NIC. You may want to get a G15 keyboard...it just kicks SO much ass.

Prebuilt it is, then. It'll most likely be running through some headphones of mine, so yeah... I guess I don't need to waste monies on a sound card. Wired internet is out of the question, so I'll just get a 802.11g 54 Mbps Wireless Laptop PC Card from Netgear. But yeah, with the illumination turned off, I'll swap out the G11 for the G15...

Well if you listen to alot of music, play alot of games then a soundcard would be a good buybut I've got an intergrated sound card and it works but its your choice.

I'll be honest with you. I use an $80 Logitech X-540 surround sound system on Integrated Hi-Def 8 channel audio, and it sounds great for games and music.

I've never seen the need for an expensive Creative soundcard. I've seen speaker systems upwards of $400USD, I guess if you're using that then it would be important to get a good card.

In terms of playing games, what's the general idea? I'd hope it'd be able to play almost anything on high settings, but we all know what Crysis is like.

What card do you suggest? I would have liked not to go over £1k, but that seems impossible now. xD

In terms of games, most should run at max settings @ 1680x1050. Some will be able to run with 2xAA and 4xAA, maybe even 8xAA at solid 30+ FPS. Crysis and the like should run pretty well with no AA and a mix of high/very high. Warhead should run at Max at a good frame rate (30+).

My 5.1 surround sound speaker system cost £96 and may get a new soundcard next year and I'm also planning on getting a new monitor as well.

I'm not big enough into audio to spend all that much on it, but I guess if you're getting a $200 system like that, a soundcard would probably be worth it. I'm sure your sound quality is fine right now, though.

Mirroring my computer much?

And you'd be better off with a 800 watt or 750 watt PSU.

P.S. the onboard for the M3N-HT is excellent. I use the optical connection and it does 5.1 / 7.1 A-okay.

P.P.S. Make sure you get the M3N-HT deluxe with the Mempipe as it helps keep things cool and breezy.

Yeah. For good MoBo's -- in my opinion -- getting a $200 or so SoundBlaster is a total waste, unless you're a mega-audiophile.

I am? Didn't even notice. Just went to a website called Scan.co.uk, and built a moderately cheap PC around the Phenom. I'll be getting the Deluxe/Mempipe one, so no problems there, and I'll make sure to up the power supply to 800... :D
