GTA 4 benchmarks say yes, LOL.  I still cant max out that game with my rig.  It wont let me.  Which is fine.  It still destroys the consoles away.

Im still waiting to see what intel is going to do in the coming 2 years or so.  My next gaming rig is gonna be great then the pc that I have now will be just for music.  Im gonna build around the Thermaltake level 10 case.

I just like games.  Couldn't care less about the platform.

is an i7 worth it for gaming?

benchmarks show that phenoms and c2q's more often than not have a slight advantage, even if it's only by a few frames, the only reason GTAIV needs it is because it's so poorly optimised and runs like crap on almost any cpu. It's definately worth it if your upgrading from an old pc, but if you have a phenom or c2q...don't believe the hype, better to save the money and put it into a gpu. Once you turn the game up to high res and put aa on, the difference between a 2.4ghz dual core, and a 4.5ghz overclocked i7, is only 1 frame at most, ( i saw benchmarks a few days back on tomshardware, or benchmarkreviews etc and the difference was 32 frames in crysis with the fastest o.c i7, and every other cpu except for 1 in the test got exactly the same score, and the one that didn't got 31frames....games are gpu bound, but GTAIV is an exception because it is the most poorly optimised port of all time)

I made this thread on pc hardware, there is a **** load of benchmarks there:

http://forums.n4g.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=726042&mpage=1#726042, if the link doesn't work just look at my profile, it will have th thread listed there

New here guys. I built this rig just over a year ago, there are some component choices I am unhappy with but I guess I'm stuck with it till my next one ^_^, still got some planned upgrades too.

------------------- rig
Antec 900 case
Asus P5N-T Deluxe Motherboard
Q6600 G0 overclocked to 3.4GHz (can get higher but... don't want to hurt my baby)
AC Freezer 7, might upgrade this and overclock my flatmates Q9400 with the spare (nice mobo he has)
Corsair TX 750W psu
2x 9800GT 512MB in sli (should have gotten 1 good card instead, upgrading in Febuary) (correct use of gotten?)
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card
4GB (4x1) PC2-8500, OCZ-SLI nVidia logod RAM (dual channel 2x2 would have been better) at 900MHz 5-5-5-15, mobo doesn't like quad channel :(
Seagate Barracuda 7200RMP 32MB Cache 500GB, aswell as some old HDDs in there for storage
Cheap sony DVD-RW
Vista Home Premium x64 - tweaked so it's not rubbish
------------------- peripherals
Samsung SyncMaster 172v 1280x1024 (next upgrade: Samsung 2443BW 1920x1200)
Logitech "Access" Keyboard - nice key feel for programming, going to purchase my flatmate's Saitek Eclipse 2 when he gets a new one
Razer Lachesis mouse (annoying, should have gotten MX5-18 or Deathadder)
Razer Mantis Control mat
Logitech X-530 Speakers
No headset :(
Cheap desk mic :D

Well anyway... looks like I'll be browsing this board somewhat

thats a very good rig you got there.

i dont think you need a gpu upgrade unless its for dx11 reasons, anyways by feb the gt300 should be out. also the 5890 (dual gpu) should be out. so prices are bound to fall.
id recommend the 24inch monitor before a gpu upgrade, its a big difference.
