I hate to double post, as I originally posted about this in the "troublesome threads", but I think this deserves special discussion.

Why was the following article not immediately deleted by a mod?

http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/News-137387.aspx

It failed approval TWICE before it got front-paged - and rightfully so, it's a low quality opinion piece akin to a blog article designed only to start flame wars and get hits.

You can see the previous two articles here:

http://www.n4g.com/NewsPendingCom-137340.aspx?CT=1

http://www.n4g.com/NewsPendingCom-137354.aspx?CT=1

Exact same link, and exact same headline story.

This is bad.  We can't let people flood N4G with duplicate negative stories about a console hoping one will get through and get approved.

The submitter and everyone who approved the article should have a temporary suspension of submittal and approval rights.  The toleration of this sort of fanboy flamefest of a "news" article is not helping this site at all.  Worst yet, it proves that community monitoring of articles is pointless, because eventually one can get "spammed in" as long as you post it enough.

This defeats the entire purpose of a community-run news site.  Wouldn't you agree?

It's not low quality. I haven't found any errors in it. It brings up a valid point. Will increased game time from GTA IV cause more rrod? It's a valid question as you play a console it heats up. Heat is a 360 problem What needs to end is people assuming truth they don't like to hear is flame bait. Peo-ple need to except The PS3 online sucks, Xbox 360 has faulty hardware. These are truths not flame bait. Why should the writer be held responsible because other people feel the need to be @$$#0!35? It's like getting mad at a stripper cause she made you feel funny in the pants.

I would have flagged his article because he has changed it's format to get more ad loads. He used to do what Horny Melon did and have an entire article on one page, now he puts 2-4 paragraphs on each page. This is so he gets more ad impressions. Not even the big blogs do this.

It was low enough quality to get rejected by the members of this site twice. Once by an admin, it seems.

How many times does a story have to get shot down before it stays dead?

Also, it's low quality because it's nothing more than a blog-ish post from a non-industry professional.  If someone wants to discuss "Will GTA4 cause a lot of 360's to die?", there are hundreds of online forums for just such a discussion.

The front page is for NEWS.  The site is NEWS for gamers.  Not Let's Discuss Random Console War Topics for Gamers.  That's what the *forum* is for.

Just for news huh? Is that why one of the top 5 stories is a forum post? I want you to go through the featured section and keep track of how many are blog posts. Then i want you to take a good hard look at all the posting time/dates. You'll find that there MIGHT have been 10 posts in the past couple of days. When I'm looking for news N4G is the last place I go for news, that's what RSS feeds are for. When I'm looking for new angles and intresting opinion I come to N4G. I think some people are under the impression that N4G is this giant site...it's not go check it's numbers on alexa.com...now go look at kotaku, then gamespot, now go look at IGN......yeah N4G does as good as it does BECAUSE of the bloggers not inspite of them. Look at other industry media, sports, celebreties, politics....there's more money being made in Op-Ed and speculation than there is being made on facts...why do you think sensationalism is so rampant in cable news?

Let's ignore the dicussion on the validity of blogs and such, because we both clearly have different views of what N4G is and what we want it to be.  Suffice it to say, I think the less N4G is like cable news, the better.

That being said - why should an article that's rejected TWICE get approved?  Clearly the community did not want it approved, and yet by spamming the article two more times, the third one got through.  Is that the message of the site?  If your article gets rejected once, keep trying until it finds enough fanboys to approve it?  I was under the impression that once an article was shot down, it was shot down for good unless a mod or administrator revived it.

This sort of thing undermines the entire point of N4G.

No we don't. You have a want and a wish. I look at cold hard numbers and I can tell you blogs get most of the traffic. Now what is actually blog and what most users THINK is a blog are two very very VERY different things.

"Suffice it to say, I think the less N4G is like cable news, the better. "

I agree, but like cable news gaming has it's slow times after christmas and summer being two of them and you need filler. Hence the bear shot out of a tree onto a trampoline news footage.

"Clearly the community did not want it approved, and yet by spamming the article two more times, the third one got through.  Is that the message of the site?"

I don't think the community should have the ability to approve. You get people that take offense to anything negative about thier chosen platform flagging crap as spam, you get point whores approving and reporting everything (I had one guy both approve my story and report it without me fixing anything), you have people flagging articles as dupes when they are not, etc. If random crap is going to make it to the front page depending on what users are online. Then why even have an approval system? Why not set it up like digg or reddit?

I don't resubmit once it's been shot down unless a moderator tells me too. However I don't even submit on the same topic anymore...

http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/News-137294.aspx

is just a forum post.

http://hornymelon.com/?p=90

is the whole story, but I know N4G users can't tell the difference so I don't bother anymore.Even if they can tell the difference, then an "unbiased" modder who dislikes an article for any reason will flag it as duplicate

http://www.n4g.com/NewsPending-130662.aspx

to have it pulled from the front page.

I've had more articles shot down over dumb errors, biased moderators, and flagged improperly than I've had approved. I don't bother submitting anything origional anymore. I just submit screenshots and trailers get my couple hundred click throughs and move on.
