I'm scared of getting one. My PS3 nver overheats and I don't want a 360 cause I keep hearing about "The Red Rings of DEATH".  Does the Elite do that too?

It gets a lot hotter then the ps3....but usually theres no problem.

I know of 4 people who have bought them with the last 8 months, and not one problem.

N4G spin. The system actually heating, is normal (if you can call it that)...

Heating up is nothing, RRoD is something, and im pretty sure 33% failure rate doesnt apply anymore (if you're buying it new).

Your risk though. I got mine in 2006, played it like a beast....and it died finally in 2008 (one ring of death)

Why can't they add the cooling fan thing already? Do I really need that? I don't like the sound of "the rings of death"

I don't think I will. If I do I probably won't get into that much cause I might have to buy everything all over again

But just to throw in some fact.

You WON'T have to buy anything over again.

At the very worst, and I mean...WORST case scenario. The thing dies on you, you call customer support, mention red rings of death, they'll send you a coffin and you get it back in a week.

And it costs you nothing.

If you have any interest whatsoever in gaming, you should get a 360 honestly. I'd get one, but I'm quitting this hobby after MGS4. I've come to loathe it and everything it stands for.

It's not N4G. Games just aren't impressing me. It's a waning interest in the medium itself. I honestly do not feel a connection to these companies, NPD results, game sales, game quality comparisons and other such nonsenses. I admit, I used to but it drew alot of enjoyment that I once had. Now, I have my studies, and I'll focus on becoming a better guitarist. I'm just gonna finish a franchise I started about 15 years ago, conclude it, and when Snake dies, so does my hobby with him.

Yeargh sir. They cover all instances of the red ring of death.

I feel you Dr. Pirate.  Gaming just isn't what it used to be to me as well.  I really only stick to buying what REALLY interests me and leave everything else to waste.  And there aren't many games that grab my attention these days.  Even if they do I usually beat them and be done with them.

But to the OP: There are good games out for 360 that i'm sure you'll like.  I still have mine from Nov. 06 and it's going strong.  Granted I haven't used it in 5 months but that first year I had a death wish for it leaving it on for hours at a time.

It's your choice, but I'm looking forward to sniping you with active reload in GeOW2 if you're gane.

@OP:

All consoles are prone to overheating issues. It's a technology problem, not just an Xbox problem. Even computers, Ipods, Video Recorders, etc... are prone to overheating. It's all in how the hardware was designed, and how well the owner takes care of his equipment.

@ Jack & Pirate:
I hear ya both on the "gaming just isn't what it used to be." I myself have lost interest in gaming due in part to many reasons both inside and outside the realm of gaming itself.

I think it started with Halo 3 tbh... I was expecting some great revolutionary game, and it really was a big letdown. It's not because of the hype, because I tried to stay away from that, I honestly felt like the game lacked the greatness that Halo 1 and even Halo 2 had.

After my Xbox broke, I've been using my time more productively rather than wasting away at games. Not to mention, the quality and caliber of games is not as great as it used to be either. I remember when games had depth, feeling, emotion, character and involvement... it's tough to find that today.

Let's not fool ourselves. The Elites are made exactly the same as any other Xbox 360. A teardown has been done on them.

People can tell you that they are sure that the 33% failure rate doesn't apply or that you will get a refurbished Xbox 360 back in a week but that's what 360 owners tell themselves to makes themselves feel better.

The older series of 360 were flawed,  MS are meant to have fixed this, I had a 360 from UK launch, it broke on me just days after Halo 3 (RROD), their Indian customer services expected me to pay $130 to get it fixed, after making her cry and demanding to speak to an English person because I couldn't understand her.  I didn't have to pay $130, I did, however, have to wait 3 weeks for a 'new unit' that's Ethernet port was broken, I was so pissed off at this point that I brought a new 360.
Any one want a 360 that  can’t go on LIVE?.
And no I'm not a fan boy, bit hard being a BETA tester.

Actually your making her cry reminds me of when my wife worked telemarketing and some loser made her cry. I seriously wanted to kill the moron. My wife has an accent. Actually we all do.

On topic, MS changed the cooling and the CPU is 65nm but they are still Red Ringing. MS has admitted they can't nail down the exact cause of the problem.

As long as you buy a new Xbox 360, you should be fine.  I hear the newer models are more durable.
