Hello, after several years of console gaming I've decided to get back into PC gaming (the last PC game I was addicted to was Age of Empires 2!).  Anyway, I am so lost as to what hardware I should be after.  My budget is £1000, that's about $1900 I think. What can I get with that kind of cash?  Hopefully I wont need a monitor (can i hook up a 42" lcd tv?)

Are you building it or buying it?

Id reccommed:
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS4
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or E8400
GPU - Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS 512mb
RAM - OCZ PC2-8500 Reaper HPC Edition
PSU- Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650w
HDD - Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ

Then you'll need a case, some fans and a sound card if you want.
That should be under the £1000 mark.

much appreciated!

With regards to the graphics card, are there any new cards out there on the horizon I should wait for?  What's this I hear about people sticking in 2 graphics cards into the m.board? Is there a noticeable difference?  Sorry for the noob questions, last time I built my own rig people were still using windows 98!

I myself wouldn't bother waiting for new ones to come out. New cards are always in the pipeline
Yes, with the motherboard I suggested you can install 2 graphic cards in sli mode (Nvidia cards). The cards must be the sameGPU but can be from diiferent card manufacturers (BFG, Gigabyte etc..).
Sli has its up and downs at present, some cards work better in Sli, some worse. Some games play better in Sli, some worse.

Well, how long do you want to keep the system? I personally prefer a system that is just a little above the performance/price sweetspot (meaning it can always play all games on medium settings before I replace it). This allows me to buy a completely new system all 2 years (I can still sell my old system for 1/4th of it's original price at this point). Each year a system has to "last longer" (in the sense explained above) will blow up the price by at least 50%.

The rig I'm building is way cheap and way powerful:

Mobo - ASUS M3N-HT Deluex (up to 3x SLi)
CPU - AMD Phenom 4x 9550 or 9600
RAM - A-DATA 2GBx2 DDR2 1066
HDD - Segate 500 GB
GFX - BFG GeForce 9800+
PSU - Cooler Master Real Power Pro 750 Watt.

Price that out. It'll be more machine that what Neon suggests. As well you have the room to drop in more 9800+s which are going to be cheap and powerful.

Does your return to PC gaming have something to do with Diablo 3  ?

But seriously, since you're building it yourself, I think you should be really careful and get the parts that work with each other perfectly.
lol at "BFG GeForce 9800+"

What's wrong with BFG? They offer the best OC'd cards on the market for great prices and as well with a life time warranty.

If you don't believe me, you go out and do the research.

That's a good motivation. Try Supreme Commander, it's great. The campaign is a bit boring, but in multiplayer it's currently the best RTS experience you can have. Be prepared for a lot of practice sessions, though, as this game is EPIC in the very sense of the word.
Another good RTS I've recently played is Rise of Legends. This one features three completely different factions and still manages to be well-balanced (something that hasn't been done since Warcraft 3).

screw Supereme Commander.

COMPANY OF HEROES!!!

Also why people still talk about 9800?

GeForce GTX 280 is only 50 EUR more then GeForce 9800 GX2 and 280 has better results on benchmarks.

(Price is compared to BFG)

Oh **** it go play Starcraft. Is till play it hahaha.

I'm installing Diablo again lolol. D3 come out already :(

Get the new ATI 4850 or 4870 cards, very cheap, should be under £200 in a couple of weeks time and it gives you about 90% of the performance of the newest Nvidia 260 and 280 cards for about half the price.
