“Well, I think that was the point,” said the exec when asked of the significance of making global product announcements in Europe.

“People say, ‘Well, why do we always get things last? Why can’t we say things?’ Well, I’ve said this many times before: sometimes it’s an advantage to be last in Europe, you know, when everything’s ironed out.

“This time, we do have things to say in the European [market]. We have the music service, and we’re doing great things on SingStar and there’s more to come. These are global announcements.

“They recognize that the show’s in Europe, whether it’s in Leipzig, Cologne or London: we can do the announcements wherever. So they said to us in Tokyo, ‘Do you want to do it here?’ And we said, ‘Yeah, we’d love to do it here.’”

Reeves led a sparkling presentation at Games Convention, during which Sony announced a 160Gb PS3 SKU, the PSP-3000, made the first showing of playable footage of Quantic’s Heavy Rain, announced the next SingStar and more.

I'm not sure what to think of this. On one hand stuff does get ironed out but on the other hand you miss a ton of games.

That's the lamest excuse ever. They know full well that they could release the US games in the UK. But they make us wait so they can shove sixteen other languages in.

I think that universal worldwide release is a good thing. Or at least as close to simultaneous as possible. Just because you tell people something doen't make it true.

That's not really the point. Not every console is region-free, and I don't want to have to keep buying Gameloaders for each console to play games released on other regions.

The nail has been hit on the head. SCEE is terrible. Their PSP's Playstation website offers only a few downloads (they're all themes back from the PSP's release), and all you'll find aside from that is crappy news. >_> They're all useless.

That's not really the point. Not every console is region-free, and I don't want to have to keep buying Gameloaders for each console to play games released on other regions.

I assumed we were talking about the PS3. The only thing you should be concerned about would be the territory restrictions due to PAL/NTSC, but that can be easily bypassed. I do understand though that it is not worth the hassle to import a game if it is coming out only after a week.
However, regionalization forms an integral part of the overall SCEE corporate structure. Making region specific games in Europe would not be financially viable. The localization process and additional tracks are necessary evils so as to proide European customers with the highest possible quality product.

You don't need Gameloader/Gameshark/CodeBreaker to play import games on your PS3. Only Bluray movies are rigorously region blocked nowadays. Anyway, worldwide releases occur more 'regularly' nowadays., so it should not really be a problem.
