will a Western Digital - 160GB Internal Hard Drive Serial ATA that transfers up to 1.5Gbps and has a 8mb cache buffer, 12 ms average seek time, 5400 rpm, or go with the 7200 rpm does it make a diff?

Go with the 5400 one, 7200 is a little bit to high for PS3.
I even heard people saying that there PS3 getted overheated and didn't get back on by using a harddrive that taked to much power of the PS3.

There's not really a need to get the 5400 rpm drives for the PS3. Like stated before, they're hot and don't do much for anything (you get like a 5-10% performance boost which is nothing because things are typically fast as is).

And you can get bigger capacity drives. They're up to 320 GB now.

go with a 5400rpm. like stated, you won't get much more performance with a 7200. the price difference doesn't justify the tiny bump of performance.

I actually have a question that is related to this.  I just got a ps3 so don't know too much about adding harddrives to the ps3.  Can I add an external to the usb and use it the same way that the internal drive is used?  or is that pretty much only good for media and stuff like that?

Nope. The external can only handle files like Gamesaves, movies, pictures, music and back-ups. Nothing game play related can be moved on to it.
