Status: offline 		A SCEE employee has confirmed that the recent PSN downtime earlier today was nothing more than maintenance and has nothing to do with the upcoming Firmware 2.40 update.

Speaking on the Official European Playstation Community Forums, Community Team Leader Lestrade states

"The PLAYSTATION Network will be offline for 5 hours today from 3pm BST (4pm CEST) for maintenance work. It's pretty much all behind-the-scenes work and is, most definitely, not the 2.4 System Software update. Sorry, you need to wait a little longer for that one!"

While this comes as no surprise, Playstation owners will have wait a little longer before firmware 2.40 hits.

    Status: offline     		i agree that 2.4 won't be launched today, but to say that this maintenance has nothing to do with it cannot be true.  When so many people have announced it'll be here shortly, and the acknowledged bugs were discovered, i'm sure they're doing everything possible to make sure it works fine.  Maybe some tests were ran, maybe they just wanted to prepare the network.  I'm hoping July 2 is the the latest we'll have to wait

    Why, PSN/Live etc go under maintenace every few months. This maintence was proablly planned months ago and is just a conwincidence (sp) that it happened so close to FW 2.40
