I have about $1500 at my disposal and I was wondering what you all would recommend. Also, I was wondering if I should build my own rig or just have it already assembled for me.  I know it would be cheaper if I built the PC myself but I don't want to end up making a costly mistake in the process.

Please recommend any websites and/or PC builds I should check out.

If you're in the UK (which I doubt) I'm qualified to built PC's (I have an OCR, VTEC, Hardware A+ and Networking A+). I'd say to every one now built you're own. If you're not too sure,  research, use an Anti static wrist-ban/mate. have a Philips-head screw-drive, pair of teasers, touch, magnifying glass. check compatibility, don't be too scared of the force needed to add RAM. Don't, under any circumstances mix you're RAM, you will only have the SLOWEST rams speed and could have other problems. make sure you're case fits you're mother board. make sure you keep you're power supply and other fans and so on powerful enough for everything. keep everything in a bag and think logically
