So I've been weighttraining for a whole month and I'm seeing results, but I've been using machines the whole time. Recently I read an article stating that using free weights is more effective than machines so I was wondering if this is true and would I get more results if I take a day or two off between work out? My last question is would it be wise to switch between workouts, for example, work out my upper body one day then the lower body the next.

I would do both machines (at the gym) and free weights (on your own time), and yes, do upper and lower.

I've seen guys with piping biceps and huge beer bellies. They only work out their biceps really. Not a great idea.

I don't weight train often myself...I just do Brazilian jujutsu and Goju-ryu on a regular basis, and tons of cardio. Occasional weight training, but all areas. As for the abs, I work those out a lot. I've never had even a slight amount of fat there, and I would hate to ever have fat there.

I see, assuming you are a body builder, do you use free weights to work out your chest or machines?

When I do work out - both. And it works fine. At the gym, usually machines, and at home, I have tons of dumbbell kits.

I don't consider myself a body builder. I don't want huge ass muscles actually, I think they look disgusting. I just work out to develop power for my Martial Arts training.

You will see better results with free weights though, but you can still use machines to build certain muscles (esp leg/calf machines). And keep working the abs...that's where all power comes from. Assuming you know a thing or two about Martial Arts, I assume you probably work the abs out a lot.

I work out and i see better results from free weights....I go 4 - 5 times a week purely doing weights and i can assure you that free weights are the way to go.

how much do you bench?

I just started weighttraining for a month so I use 35lb for each side. When I'm using the machines to work out my chest I can do 150lbs. Really strange. It seems like free weights is the way to go.

I have another question guys, in which order should I do work out? I always start out with Cardio then end with abs work out. For my weightlifting routine, should I start with my chest > shoulders > triceps > biceps?

If you had to go with one it would be free weights because it works out your secondary muscles that give support to your primary muscles.  Also it is a great idea to focus and assign a certain day on a couple groups of major muscles.  For a beginner you should start with the major exercises that focus on the most muscle because they use the most energy, they cover the most muscle groups, and they release the most horomones that are essential to growth and strength.

For a back/bicep day the first exercise after you warm up should be the pullups/chinups and then you go to barbell curls.  For triceps/chest day start with bench press then you can hit the machines for flys/tricep push downs.  For leg day the major exercise is the squat and then you go to deadlift/leg lefts for calves, and then you can hit the machines.

You can use both but the main difference is that Machines tend to isolate the large muscle your targeting and Free weights get those lil control muscles in between that help control/form and overall determine how soon you can go up in weight. I personally prefer free more because I see more results for myself but I DO use machines too. Ready GO!!!

I didnt read other people's responses sorry for the same info over,

Definitely switch areas between workouts. I like to do a M/W/F workout with some T/TH/Sat. Cardio and switch it up. It works fine for me and i've been weighttraining for a while now. Also free weights are always best, I try to never use machines.

Go online and download as many videos of the P90X program along with the weekly workout schedule.

In a single week you will notice crazy results, trust me. But let me just say that it is not easy, and you will hurt for about the first two weeks. The videos also make you want to keep up with the program.

So yeah, P90X is definitelly the way to go.

Machines are useless for weight training, use free weights. Free weights target all the muscles, even the stabilizer muscles.

Allot of people who only use machines do allot less in free weights too. It really is best to just stick with free weights when there is an alternative Le-mo. If there isn't an alternative (for things like neck, smaller muscles, etc.) then use a machine.

You can buy free weights...they're cheaper than machines.

Le-mo, I would add to your current work out stretching before and after weights (you probably already do but I didn't see it on your list). I usually do cardio and then stretch, some people do it the other way, but I don't think it's practical to stretch until your body's warmed up.

1. Train with machines doesn't help your secondary muscles out much. Which doesn't mean anything to you until you move up in weight and pull something.
2. Not every exercise is good for everyone. Straight bar curls(curls with a barbell), French curls and Overhead Triceps extension are good for no one(it will give you tennis elbow, it is no joke). Behind the neck pull downs are only good for your shoulders.
3. This is foot placement a squat. If you don't do it my way you will walk like House MD. Jump up three times. where your feet land that is where your feet should be in the squats.
4. Take Calcium. Your nerves run on calcium. Spasms from begin unable to relax you muscles is my definition of un-fun.
5. Fiber bars. 20 to 30 grams. You will be eating a lot of food. Without fiber bars, I feel like a sox puppet with a fist where the doesn't shine.
6. Making a chest is easy. Watch your breathing to protect your neck.
7. This is breathing. Straight threw your nose. Pain out of your mouth.
8. Abcbodybuilding.com
9. Tri-Extensions pull downs light for warm up.
