So I received my white dualshock 3 from Japan the other day and much to my delight I noticed that it was not wrapped in the typical finger mangling clamshell plastic packaging. Pulled out a staple and out came my device, couldn;t be simpler.

So my question is why the hell is the US still so hell bent on taking the joy out of opening consumer electronics??? From my calculations it costs more and just all around sucks. Please, for the love of the god, destroy clamshell packaging.

I like it most when they do it for stuff intended for kids.  It's so troublesome I've taken to removing it from gifts for my niece and nephew before wrapping so they can just play with it right away.

The swiss and germany and sweden are practical enought to make some amazing packaging too. I think the clamshell is for people who steal. You cant take contents out of clamshell in the store very easily.

They do it because it is cheap, easy, makes people less likely to steal things, protects products during shipping and handling, increases the size of the package, easily recyclable, allows for them to display the product in the package and consumers put up with it

I hate those things! I bought some wifi-USB thing once and got so pissed off after a while I cut it with a pair of scissors and when I got it open I noticed I had cut the CD with the software in half

Bang on.

Also it's tamper-proof packaging so people know when it's been opened and used, unlike using a staple.

I 'rented' one of the PS Memcard to USB adapter and all it was packaged in was cardboard and tape so basically when I was done with it (ie paying $20 to use for 5 mins) it was impossible to tell that I had opened it and used it since the packaging was so easy to put back together. None the less the woman who I was taking my return ripped it open althought I clearly said and it looked like I had not opened it.

I'm having a slightly difficult time comprehending it being cheaper than o ther packaging methods. Typically the plastic used is a fairly stout gauge (more plastic means more expensive). While the packaging from japan's plastic was much much thinner and had a cardboard back rather than even more plastic with the clamshell.

I always hurt my mouth when opening things using the clamshell, there's never any scissors near by.

I think that type of packaging is used because it provides a higher level of structural support for the package w/out having to resort to using a box w/ packaging materials in order to "pad" the product inside.

I've rented stuff too. Especially when something I have breaks. Sure beats paying for shipping and repairs and waiting 8-10 weeks to get it back. This way the store sends it back anyways.
