The original idea was to have him in the third one but now they will probably write him out. The next villain my guess will be Riddler or Catwoman or even Bane. We will find out by the end of this year if they are even making a third one,

I recall reading somewhere (might've been msn.ca..or some ish) that they were looking into getting Depp to play the Riddler for the next flick.

As far as Joker goes, although the series would be somewhat lacking without him, due to Heath's untimely death, I hope they write him out, with a simple scene of how he was 'taken care of' in the next flick.

Besides, I don't think anyone will be up for the job.
Heath's performance was remarkable. It'll take quite a bit to match, let alone top, that.

I'm pretty sure Nolan is going to use some unused footage from TDK for the next Batman.

i dont want them to recast. that would be like the ultimate insult.

also depp may be good as riddler but al hope is lost with the jokr as heath was made for tht part as i say all actors were made for 1 film

i.e  Jonny Depp - Pirates OTC

    jim carrey - mask

    heath ledger - Joker

so on and so forth

i really did like jim carrey as The Riddler and hope to see a repeat performance ???

no, i agree that carrey did a great riddler, but that's my opinion. i just don't think nolan will want him for his film.
depp is an awesome actor so he could play a lot of roles.

If Depp is going to play any character in the Batman universe, it has to be the Penguin. Depp is an amazing actor who is not afraid to cover himself in make-up. If they go towards a deformed guy like they did in  Batman Returns than I know that the only other person who would be able to play the penguin would be Gary Oldman, but he is already busy.

Then again, many actors have played multiple roles in a single movie before and I think Oldman can more than pull it off.

If catwoman is the next villan than I think that they would have to go for an unknown actor. Catwoman is such a well known charactor (although not really a villan in the traditional sense) that a big actor would just distract us from the charactor itself. Which is why I think Heath worked out so well. While he was a known actor he was not a huge actor and, as I have said in another post, you could even recognize him. Not his voice, not his face, not his manerisms. He was the Joker.

That being said, they almost have to bring him back (the joker I mean). He did not die, plus he opens the door to other characters (namely Harley Quinn).

They also have two choices for the next villan, as far as I am concerned. They can either bring in the Riddler, or the Penguin. The Riddler would be a kind of copy cat of the Joker, throw Batman off by playing with mind. Pushing him closer to the edge that the Joker showed him. The penguin on the other hand would be a criminal mastermind who is moving in in order to fill the void of the missing organized crime rings. From what I understand of the new Penguin (the old one being from Batman Returns) he is an arms dealer? He would be supplying low level thugs with super powerful weapons.

All of this is just specualtion of course as I know next to nothing about the new comics.

Depp is not playing the penguin. I do not see him as the penguin he is more of the riddler. There are other people that can do the penguin easily.

Why can't Depp play the Penguin? Depp has shown again and again that he can ahndle complex roles and comvery emotion through a crap load of make-up. I can't honestly think of any character I would rather see him playing.

I rather see him play the riddler. That seems like his type of character.

They will use him again some day. In 20 years some guy will most likely try to reboot batman again

Heath Ledger did a great job as the Joker, but that doesn't mean that many years from now, there's not going to be somebody that could do the same or a better job at it.

The only reason they won't use the joker this generation again is because they just can't. They will tarnish Ledger's performance.

As for the Penguin.. I don't see him as a good character for Nolan's style.  Now the Riddler could be the perfect villain for the next installment.

Like some said, Johnny Deep is a GREAT choice for this character.  Deep has basically dedicated his career as a character actor, so a role like this would be easy and interesting for him.

He also has a history of dark movies.

In the end though, it doesn't matter who plays who. What matters is the script that is written for them. If it wasn't for the writing and direction of Nolan, Ledger probably would have done a completely different job. A good story nothing without good actors, There are no good actors without good stories.
