can anyone tell me if buying a external fan will help prevent RRODs, and about how much time playing on the 360 is "too much"
also, what are the other big hardware failures i should be worried about, and what are the causes of them

(i have a PS3 right now, but i got a $250 circutcity gift card and i wanna use it to buy a 360)

oh yeah, one other thing, does the premium console come with an HDMI cable? or is that only for the elite?

As scared as I am of using Microsoft hardware, combating it with 3rd party hardware scares me even more. I've heard of fans doing more harm than good, plus they're loud.

I don't know if there's a recommended limit to amont of time played, but after 4 hours (usually when I get a headache from playing too much) it feels reeaaallly hot and I like to turn it off just to cool it down. I wouldn't leave this thing on overnight though, I'm certain that's some sort of a fire hazard.

The only problem I know of off hand is disc scratching/disc stray damage. Just don't move the console while it's on.

I do not believe the premium comes with HDMI, if it does I'm not using it. But go for the Elite.

Well I had a 360 and I got rid of it... and I will never own one again... with that said there are some really good games on the 360...

As for the hardware aspect.... i would advice anyone to a wait... wait and see what MS is going to do with the warranty coverage of the RRoD.... it is up in November....

there are many problems that the 360 have they still have been covering as well but one thing they have dropped is coverage for the optical drive... there has been some problems with the optical drives but not nearly what problems there are with the RRoD...

I was on my 3rd 360 when I traded it in.... my friend as well had gone through three when he got rid of his....

If you have the money and are willing to get one than do it there are a lot of great games on that system.... I know there are more than a few I would love to get my hands on...

But just remember it is not if your 360 will break but when... if it dies during the warranty great but that will be up soon and than you will have to shell out the money to replace it if you want to play your games... it is hard to invest in something that is going to break...in so little time...

DO NOT use that nyko or pelican intercooler.

i just bought the core..the arcade one since i have an HDD already. It actually has an HDMI port, but just comes with a composite cable. I think only the Elite comes with the cable. But that wasn't really an issue with me since ihave cables fro mmy previous 360.

A reason i got rid of my 360 i got back from Msoft was becasue this warranty thing they had going was almost up. Now i have a 2yr store warranty with my 360.

Oh, in regards to a warranty. I had a launch 360 so I was covered, but I do suggested getting a store warranty. The ONLY product I would advise getting a store warranty for.

Not trying to scare you, but I bought a new falcon chip 360 with HDMI about 2 months ago and it only lasted for four days. It was a pretty scarring experience that guaranteed I would never buy another one again. Sadly, I have to wait for all of those good games to come out on PC.

I will say though that Gears was fantastic. I'm just weary of suggesting 360's to other people. I know it has some really great games, but the RROD is a force to be reckoned with.

Wow, so you're the 1% failure rate from the PS3?

I was. I can't remember why but someone wanted to get through so i moved the 360 while i was playing gears and i started hearing the noise. It took me a while to figure out it was the cd scratching too. By the time i realized it, the game was no longer readable by the 360. Still traded it in for another game though. By that time i think i had played enough gears to just let the game go

I would highly advise that you purchase a 360 that was manufactured FEBRUARY 2008 or LATER.

Make sure to look under the small flap on the 360 retail box, to check for the manufacture date.

Seriously....within my first week working at the electronics section at Target, the display 360's DVD drive has stopped working, and it no longer outputs video or audio.

It just turns on and that's it.

Additionally, all premium 360 models made after September 2007, I believe, have HDMI ports added as part of the motherboard.

Just please be very careful that you purchase a NEW model that was RECENTLY manufactured.

Oh, and buy an extended warranty from the store you get the 360 from.

dont get an external cooler

those always do more damage than good, and they're just a waste of time

really, its mostly up to you- you have to take good care of it, give it plenty of breathing space and dont accidently leave it running for long periods of time

Most intercoolers pull power from the 360 and in turn make it hotter, get a regular desk fan to put behind it instead. I was using that method for awhile but said screw it if it breaks it breaks. I also wouldn't worry about how much you play it. I play mine on average 6 to 8 hrs day since September and it really gets no hotter then if I was playing it for 4. I wouldn't waste the extra cash on a extended warranty but thats just me. There are other ways of getting a new system if yours breaks down besides MS's or an extened warranty.

Have no clue about the fans but I've got two 360's.  One is a launch day and the other is is a Halo 3 360 (wanted an elite but counldn't find it) that I bought in november of last year.  I have had NO PROBLEMS from either.  Trust me when I say that both have been played ALOT and for more then 30 minutes at a time.

1) only the elite comes with a HDMI cable

2) The hardware failures are nowhere near as common now as they were (although N4G would have you think otherwise); dont worry about the amount of time you spend on it or about RROD; if its going to happen it'll happen regardless of whether you play alot or a little. I have played on my elite constantly since I got it last August and I haven't experienced any hardware faults whatsoever

3) Make sure you dont turn the 360 around while there is a disk running; because the laser is so high speed - the laser cuts across the disk and could cause it to shatter; which could potentially break the innards. Dont put it on a carpet if you dont have to; (like any console) because that will encourage heat to stay in the console as its an insulator.

4) Wait until GTA4 to release for a pricedrop; it'll happen before then.

5) Have fun :)

Dude the best thing you can ask yourself is if you know anyone irl that has xbox live.
Theres nothing more fun than playing online games with real life friends and family.
