Ubuntu or Kubuntu? - May-12th-2008 10:49:10

Any opinions of either of these OS'es? I know I could ask a tech forum, but asking here is more fun. :)

I managed to get 3 OS'es running on my computer; XP, Vista, and now I want a Linux distro.

I'd go with Ubuntu Linux.

You don't want Kubuntu.

All Kubuntu is is Ubuntu with KDE pre-installed.

In my experience KDE applications crash a lot (even when I used Suse Linux ages ago). The GNOME environment is so much easier and smoother than KDE.

However, even with GNOME you can still run KDE apps; I use a few of them myself, but I try to limit, as they really are unreliable, and slow the computer down when running.

What I would do though is this:

1. Install ubuntu.
2. In a terminal type "apt-get install kde"
3. Try both, and make your mind up.

If you want to install Kubuntu (kde interface / windows-like desktop), then in a terminal, type the following:

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Dukester, are you sure you can just do "kde" instead of kubuntu-desktop?

I know you can search for "kde" in synaptic, and it'll pull up kubuntu-desktop, but I don't remember if the terminal will find kubuntu-desktop and resolve the dependencies for it too.

I'll try it right now to be sure.

Ok "kubuntu-desktop" requires installation of about 740MB of files, while using "kde" results in 620MB of files.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.... Ubuntu is amazing. After installing it, youll start to wonder why you payed for XP.... Atleast I did.... even though I never actually payed for it.....
