So, looks like Valve cannot ignore the success of the PS3 anymore. Gabe Newell, head of the critically acclaimed studio sparked a bit of controversy when he repeatedly attacked the PS3's difficult development architecture, calling it a "waste of time." His studio refused to work on a PS3 version of The Orange Box, leaving it to EA to do the eventual PS3 port.

However, it looks like the continued success of the PS3 has the studio taking back some of his words. "We're always evaluating what's happening in the marketplace and certainly something that's happening in the last couple of months is that Sony's managed to sell some boxes," said Doug Lombardi to CVG. "So whether or not you like developing for that platform, if they've got millions of people connected to that platform and buying their games you have to take it seriously."

While there's "zero chance" for a PS3 version of the upcoming zombie multiplayer game Left 4 Dead this year, there's now a "50-50" chance that it will happen some time next year. While we're fans of Valve's work, we're not entirely sure if the PS3 audience will welcome them with open arms.

Update: Huge mistake folks. The headline says Valve's Gabe Newell, when it was in fact, Doug Lombardi that made the comment. We apologize for the mistake -- the article has been corrected.

intersting. If Left 4 Dead came to PS3 this year I wouldn't buy it. Doesn't look very good.

Well it's Valve so it should be good. I wouldn't buy it this year either though. Too many better looking games coming out between now and Christmas.

I thought the whole Gabe Newell thing was kind of an asinine thing for someone to say, but it's his money.  If he didn't want to try and get the PS3 folks' cash, that's for him to decide.  Now that the PS3 is selling consistantly, the tune has changed.  About damn time, and we want to see HL2: ep. 3 ported by Valve, not someone else.

Yeah there are just too many must-have titles this year for Left 4 Dead to even begin crawling its way up my radar.

My question is, how are you going to let someone beat you at your own game, and completely shut you out?  They may be able to make good games, but they can't play worth a damn.

Not everyone is going to like the PS3's unconventional architecture, so I dont understand why people get so upset about what Valve and Id say or think

LMFAO.... yeah, talk about backtracking. You're telling me they didn't think this up a while ago while the geniuses at VALVE were busy bashing the PS3 because they figured there was no money to be made and that it would be a "waste of time" because it wasn't comparable to a PC development platform?

*gasp*

So suprising! Wait, VALVE is still ignorant for ignoring one of the largest brands in videogaming on the market today, regardless of their supposed "development costs". That's like making millions of dollars a year, and complaining that your favorite item isn't on sale when you go to the store to buy it.

Yes, well considering console gaming takes up the majority of the market right now, I'd say it's a given to figure this as being referred to.

I was just looking on some pics of Gabe newell giving a presentation and couldnt stop laughing while thinking about his obesity. I felt no one would take him seriously on stages as they all will laugh.
I know I shouldnt make fun of obesity but I couldnt stop myself.

Valve is a small company do you honestly expect them to learn a new console and develop for 2 other platforms at the same time?

At most they have like 150 people at Valve, you then got them updating all their old games for free and then you got them fixing bugs in steam and working on some other games. Valve still makes quite a bit of money from the Steam platform which does have around 15 million people who own an account including me.
