I have been thinking recently while playing my DS, GP2X and PSP is there really a point in having home systems anymore?.

I am seriously thinking of not bothering next time round, handhelds have gotten to such a point now that there is no game type they can not handle. Handhelds are small and neat, they can do full 3d now, they are online and play other things like music and video.

Home systems are going to be for graphics whores only as thats the only thing they have over the handhelds, I think the future of gaming can be held in the palm of your hand, and can honestly say that I can see a time in the not to distant future when the home console, chained as it where to the TV and mains is nothing more then something people will laugh at in museums.

I still prefer home consoles but that also has to do with the size of games and other factors, however that will change over time for portable games. I want to be able to play a home console. I'm not a big portable gamer being that I don't travel too much and when i do mostly im driving so thats just dangerous

I'm not a graphics wh0re either(though i think there should be a standard). Home consoles still seem good with me. Plus if i want to watch movies or whatever i can. And i can pump up the volume on my surround sound system.

What i would enjoy(and is starting to like with the PSP and PS3) is when a portable system can function with a home console seamlessly.

You can do much more with a home system than a portable... it would suck having to get your friends together to play rock band on the DS the drummer would not be happy.... lugging all that stuff around...

I agree that the handhelds are awesome but there will always be a place for home consoles.  There is a shift slowly happening where bigger named games are going to handhelds and it's a warm welcome in my eyes but no need to get rid of the home console.

5.1 soon 7.1 surround sound
BigScreen HDTV's
Couch + Controller + Soda and Snack

Who would want to play games any other way?
I like my experience playing video games to be immersive...
I tried to get into handhelds of this gen but just couldn't because:

I didn't have time or will to play games while out in the world
I didn't like the small screen
I didn't like the super squeezed in controls
I coulda bout some nice headphones to make the audio acceptable but with all the other downers I couldn't justify it.
SOLD

To each there own I say

Some Gamers love em and thats great but it seems I have become quite jaded and am always looking for my next fix be it bigger this better that new games this new tech that etc.

Besides that Home Consoles have become quite the Media Hub Providing BluRay movies and Digital DL of all sorts of entertainment for your non gaming pleasure's

Nomad had tv connectivity and controller ports so it could function as a home system.

GP2X has PC connectivity, TV out, Dvix player, MP3 player and with the addition of a cradle controller ports.

a few years ago people walked around with CD walkmen now they never would, a few years ago mobile phones just did calls, people like there technology small and compact with many features.

the Wii is small, remove the dvd drive and that could be a handheld, the DS is the biggest selling machine of this gen.

Graphics have gone pretty much as far as they can, I say theres one more gen left and that will be it, they will be more real looking then real life and then what? I say the future is portable but that doesn't mean no TV, it mean something you can take everywhere with you with pretty much everything on it and hook up to things indoors.

To me I prefer home consoles because I just love kicking it back, looking at a big screen and twiddling my thumbs.

Handhelds are cool but I only tend to play them when I am waiting for an appointment or when I am on the road.

I guess so but if portable games systems and home consoles can interact seamelssly its not really an issue then. like transferring games to your like psp for example.

games on consoles are just bigger better and will always keep improving.  Handhelds will always be (more than a few) steps away.  Also, just because they can, it's not always the best.  I love Portable Ops on the PSP, but having to switch the camera with the directional buttons, and use the stick to move at the same time can be a major pain at times.  There was a pretty hard learning curve to get that down.  I don't think home consoles will ever be replaced; to be honest, i think they will increase.  The distinction between home console and pc gaming is getting smaller, and is the "final frontier"; if consoles can replace pc gaming, i think it'll be almost universal

Hold on. If you're trying to tell us that one of the advantages of some handhelds is the possibility of connecting them to your TV then you're not really saying we should get rid of home consoles. You're really just saying we should make home consoles more portable. A handheld that spends the majority of it's time hooked up to your TV is basically serving the same function as a home console.

the next logical step from linking machines is merging the two don't you think?.

I would think that could be quite expensive though oever time it would get better. What if you just want a home console or a dedicated portable player?

For example kids. I have a feeling parents wont want to drop money on something like that, but something like a psp or ds.

I personally like home consoles, because I find no need to be portable. If I'm not at home, I'm probally doing somthing and don't have time to play games. As far as sitting at home and playing a portable, well I rather play on the big screen.

Yeah but it's a portable, the defining feature of a home system is that it's chained to the home, without the TV and the mains it's pointless, handhelds can hook up to indoor equipment and be picked up and taken out with you now days, if you choose not to take it out or sit on the bog playing it thats up to you but that doesn't make it any less a handheld pocket sized system.

If you look at the home systems right now the biggest single thing on them is the dvd drive, if they can get over the use of discs and move to chip based flash media or HD or something else consoles will get smaller and smaller, if they are going to be really small they may aswell add a LCD screen and make em handheld .

I really hope they drop disc formats, they must do sometime, it don't matter how big they are, they are all crap, the discs get scratched and dirty, moving parts get worn out and they make alot of noise.

Well I guess if portable gaming tickles your fancy than awesome, but for me, its not enough. I love console gaming, always have. I like my PC too but with consoles I don't have to keep upgrading every two or so years to play the latest games. Theirs just so much more to console gaming imo.

Gamers will still be seriously limited in selections as most of the big name companies only support the big consoles with their big names.

Disks might be outdated soon, but thats whats cool about the bluray disks since they have that protective layer on them. Something they should of done ages ago. Especially for music CD's And dont worry, im not like a bluray fanatic or anything Though i do buy bluray films occasionally, but rent them mostly.

But still the problem is the price. Especially as i said before if a kid wants a portable game system, they will have to buy that as well. Unless there are options of course.Or else the parents wont probably buy it for them if they have to drop 300 or more dollars(alot more when it first comes out of course)
