...I feel that Insomniac and Ratchet and Clank do it best.  This isn't to start a huge war, but honestly, I think that this game sets the bar for platformers.  The puzzles might not be that hard, but this game is about a mix of all platforming types.

Other platformer gamers are all about intense puzzles and others are like, idk...Mario-esque where you just try to win and find all the secret stuff.  Ratchet and Clank - always has secrets to unlock, some which are rather hard too. And the skill points gives you a reason to replay the game over and over, especially since it is a bit easer to do so after you have unlocked a bunch of stuff after beating the game(this is sometimes the only way to do so).

The best part about it is that there is a story, it makes sense, and it is pretty comedic.  All I'm saying is, this is a game a lot of people should play/own, especially if you are a PS3 owner, or actually, any sony system after the ps1.  There's even one on mobile phones, but that isnt as deep or fun, but it is still pretty funny.

Did I mention that this game always looks great, no matter what system you play it on. I could go on and on actually, but this is to the PS3/PS2/PSP as Crash Bandicoot was to the PS1, even better, and that is saying a lot. Now, if only Jak and Daxter would come back and partner up release dates with it again, it could be a great team just like Spyro and Crash were back in the good old days.

Now I patiently await Ratchet Team Racing...
ZOMG THAT WOULD BE SOO AWESOME!!!!

No platformer to date compares to the awesomeness of Bubsy 3D.

i disagree, im currenlty playing through R&C now on the ps3, its good but not that good, i still think Mario is King, i mean Mario 64 is almost the perfect platformer and i think Uncharted is a better platformer than R&C to

Is it not that good because it's not that good, or is it not that good because it doesn't fit your liking...I for one, did not expect this to be that good, even tho I liked the series on ps2.  This is why I have not bought the game, I rented it because I wanted something to play until GTA4 and Blockbuster has a $1 a day deal for all movies/games so I tried it out.

But you are entitled to your opinion, I just wanted sort of an explanation for why you don't like it as much, seriously no offense.

Yes, agreed 100% about Uncharted being a better platformer than Ratchet TOD.

i never played the full uncharted but i never considered it a platformer...more like an action shooter/third person shooter type thing...i guess if i think about it now, it is more of a platformer.

It is actually more of a third person shooter game though the platforming parts are amazing imo.

Without a doubt Nintendo is still king of platformers. R&C series is way behind in terms of platforming the bread and butter of r&c is the strange and interesting guns.

Crash 2 and 3 were laeps and bounds better.

And I liked Ratchet as a platformer alot. It had a mix of platforming and extreme weapons and more-so-then-expected fun minigames.

I don't know, when I played FTOD I got the same awesome platform feeling I got the first time I played Mario 64 (Not as timeless as the classic Mario games IMO) and the first Sonic Adventure. Especially during the hunts for Leviathan souls and you look out, and you can see every single Leviathan on the planet.

The numerous game mechanics kept the game fresh for me so the running and gunning never got monotonous, hell sometimes I'd just keep playing the same area just so I could level up my weapons. The only part I could have done without were the ship segments, I just wanted to get to the next planet.

played banjo kazooie the other day on an emulator just to see what it was like at the time when it came out thought it just looked like a mario rip off but it's bloody great funny and inventive
Ratchet and clank just doesn't appeal to me seem more of a shooter than a straight up platformer stuff like mario and banjo seem to have inventive ways further your progress on a level that make you think where as ratchet seem to take reactions and a bigger gun but I haven't played ratchet so it's a little unfair to criticize it but thats just how it looks from what ave seen in trailers and playing the PS2 version for a while.

Portal is the best platformer so far this gen in my opinion

BK is cool but imo mario 64 is still supreme. Only played BK1 never played Banjo Tooie. Only played ratchet and clank tools but it was pretty decent i would put it on par with banjo but not on par with mario

Banjo Kazooie (plus Tooie) is my favourite.

Bonesaw is the best recent times 2D platformer, though.

IDK...it think everyone should play Up your arsenal/Tools of Destruction and then re-state opinions, unless you already have.  RTOD keeps things interesting at all times and has some interesting platforming aspects that are fresh everytime, not all aspects are new tho...and its not all about the guns, as I thought when i first heard of the series.  I'm pretty sure you can go throughout the whole game w/o using any of the guns...just the wrench...now this does not count for the missions where you have to use the weapons to do something, and the gadgets you need to do something.

I just feel that every mario game I play is pretty much just jump around until you find the exit while collecting stars and coins(it's still good tho).  I just think I like how Ratchet and Clank blends a bunch of styles together tho.

Still it only seems fair that Mario platformer = Mario Kart, Crash Bandicoot platformer = Crash Team Racing, so it only fits that Ratchet and Clank platformer = Ratchet and Clank Kart racing game....didnt banjo kazooie have one too, I almost forgot Donkey Kong platformer = Diddy Kong Racing too!

BK never had one. Banjo, Kazooie and Conker debuted in DK racing though, before they had their own, successful and excellent Rare games.
