I just wonder since my PS3 is recognized through my broadband connection that it might get confused if I try to update another machine. I just want him to have the graphic updates and such for his PS 2 titles, as well as anything else that doesn't deal with online. ( he doesn't have broadband)

If you really think it will mess up the connection. Then just download the update from playstation.com they should have it there. Then put it on a flash drive.

It's fine you're just providing him with a source for the data, nothing wrong with that, it won't hurt anything.

Don't listen to them, your ps3 is going to brick.

No.

I've updated my PS3 via different internet conections and it's always been fine, as have others PS3's. Nothing to worry about.
