So we all know the hype for 2008 - which games people are expecting to deliver and which games are expected to be colossal flops.

My question to you is - what games do you think will take people by surprise in 2008? In both a good and bad way. i.e, what will fail to live up to the hype, and what will transcend its hype.

At first I was thinking of haze as biggest dissapointment; but the hype for that game is pretty minimal - so I changed my mind to spore. I can see what this game is trying to do - I just dont see how it can actually be fun to play.

I think there are a couple of games that will take people by surprise and come away as some of the best games of 2008; fallout 3, the new prince of persia - and fable 2 all stand out.

so what do you think? biggest dissapointment, biggest surprise of 2008.

I've been preaching about this game since October, I'll say it again: Brutal Legend. It's going to be the game that comes and sweeps everyone by surprise, except me because I knew the awesome already. With the premise, characters, art direction, the world, the lore, the MUSIC, humor, and the genius that is Tim Schafer you just can't go wrong with it even if you don't like metal. It was my fear that this game would be swept under the rug only to be embraced by a small cult following (much like Psychonauts), but since it has some pretty high profile talent on board, I don't think this one will go as quietly. Besides it wins against all for having Dio in it.

As I don't think Killzone 2 is coming out this year, I'm going to put Too Human under the surprise disappointment category. Even though I do want it, it's been in development for so long and through so many different iterations I'm not sure if it'll live up to the hype in its final form. I hope I'm wrong though because I appreciate SK for trying to do something different storywise, the gameplay just didn't look like it would be much fun after a while. Then again I hated the hell (no pun intended) out of Diablo and that same OCD grind for uber gear feel looks like it transfered into TH.

Not even 5 months in to 2008 and you're trying to call this???

How about we wait and see all the fallout in 2009 before trying to make calls like this.

Nice thread.
Though I disagree on Fallout 3. Dude, the game was already nominated for best game of E3 at last year's event and has been on cover of many great magazines from GFW to Game Informer to OXM and such. It's already hyped and hopefully will deliever and it wont be surprising if it does since it's sequel to the best RPG of all time and is being made by Bethesda, whose Oblivion won lots of GOTY awards (Even though I didn't like it as much as Morrowind).

Skerj, definitly agreed on Brutal Legend but I don't think it surprise either. Tim Schafer = Nuff said.

As for my picks:
Surprisingly superb / better than hype:
- Brothers in Arms 3 HH
- Prototype
- Ninja Gaiden 2
- Resistance 2
- DarkSiders

Disappoiting / worse than hype:
- Haze
- Too Human
- Killzone 2
- Midnight Club LA
- Tekken 6

Dude, what are you talking about? This thread is for predicting hits and flops and this is the right time because by the 2009, the flops and hits would be obvious.

Speaking of hits, I'd like to add the new Prince of Persia to my list of sleeper hits / surprises but it's possible that Ubi may start a crazy hype for during UbiDays 2008 (May).

EDIT: Sorry about the double post.

Agreed. Ubisoft is taking a huge risk on the new PoP and I hope they pull it off.

I chose fallout 3 because although its recieving alot of hype in the media; I haven't noticed this anticipation being mirrored amongst gamers ( to a large extent)

I'll also say (hope) that sonic unleashed surpasses its current (abyssmal) levels of hype.

Good points on Fallout 3, it's indeed only hyped among gaming sites and critics. The gamers haven't shown much support (Sadly  )

As for Prince, definitly agreed. It has already entered my top 5. The thing that I'm excited about the most is a more poetic and persian feel and themes. The Ahriman , gods and the whole mythology of the game is purely Persian. No arabic or other non-persian stuff. A real Persian Prince with a real story from 1001 Nights.

I'm not so positive about Sonic Unleashed. I'm a die hard Sonic fan but have completely lost my faith in modern / 3D Sonic games and don't think Unleashed is gonna restore my faith.

OMG, Borderlands, how could I forget!? That should also be added to my hits list.
UPDATE: As Skerj said, it's probably a 2009 game... But dude, you named Brutal Legend yourself, a game that definitly 2009

I thought Borderlands got pushed to 09, because I was looking forward to some coop action on there as well.

I'll throw in my vote for brutal legends as well.  Grim Fandengo was amazing, as was full throttle.  I'm happy to see him make another game, and nothing about this game seems ordinary.  Unfortonutely, the lack of media is making it not-so well known to the general public.  I promise you all though, you will be in for a suprise if you haven't been following it.

Flops (loosely defined)

Fable 2
I'm not saying it won't be good, but it won't live up to hype. They over-promise and under-deliver.

Gran Turismo 5
Is this game even coming out this year??? Oh well. If you ask me, they've promised too much. It'll be the best driving game out, but it won't live up to hype. I'd be willing to bet it gets delayed at least once due to them having to create damage models, also.

Soul Calibur IV
Yup. I said it. I'm just not feeling it this time around. I'll still buy and enjoy it, but it will underperform compared to other Soul Calibur games.

Halo Wars
Besides the fact that an RTS on a console is hard to pull off, most extreme Halo players I know don't like RTS games. They are either too hard or too boring for them. I predict this game will be pale in comparison to others in the same genre.

Suprise Hit

GRID
laughed at it at first, but it's already turning me around with reports of its A.I.

Killzone 2
These days everyone expects KZ2 to fail. I see it sailing beyond all expectations, and suprised all of the naysayers. Everything we've seen this far looks totally amazing, so I expect the game to be.

Wardevil
We don't know much about this game, but the creators are obiously talented. Faith alone puts this game on my list.
