With all the Gamestop hate floating around I thought I'd ask everyone's opinion/ideas on what would make the perfect game store.

Is there a way for a company to accept trade-ins without only giving the consumer $10 for it and then selling it again for $5 less?

How much gaming knowledege is enough/too much for the employees? etc.

***Please refrain from "a gamestore that gave me all the games for free" type posts***

A store that sells new and used games for cheap, but competitive prices... such as 1/2 the retail.

A store that buys back games at 1/3 the retail value (at a max) and subtracts based upon condition. So if you do the math, that's $20 for a $60 game... that's not too bad.

Sort of like the Gamefly business model. Also, they should only hire competent employees, who show enthusiasm for their work. Too many times have I been served by a mubling teenager who reeks of depression, and seems to be too caught uyp in his "deep" thoughts to pay attention to what I'm actually bloody selling.

It should also be devoid of fanboys. That would be great.

If the store gets the games I want in on the release date, then I don't care about anything else.

The most annoying thing to me about Gamestop is when I go in there and ask about a particular release date for a game, it's immediately followed by something like, "Did you reserve your copy with us yet?"  This statement implies that a)  I intended to reserve it in the 1st place,  b)  Gamestop is the only place I can reserve it, or c)  a & b.  It would be better IMHO if they asked you if you'd like to reserve it, rather than assume that you want to reserve it with them.  I'd actually be more inclined to reserve a game if they'd simply rephrase it like, "I can reserve a copy for you if you'd like."

Basically what I'm saying I guess is that I'd like a gamestore to have employees that were more motivated to help you rather than themselves.

I definetely agree with the realease date debacle. I'm curious if they ever get updates about popular games, etc. The other day I asked if they were going to be getting the white dualshock 3 (Im in the US) and the guy behind the desk told me the DS3 should be out soon but not yet. I calmly pointed out that there were about 20 on the wall behind him and our conversation ended there.

I have to say that given the durribilty of Blu-ray disks over DVDs, it's getting harder to mark them down, but there should be more of a markdown than pure profit. That's real ass on EB/Gamestop's part and it has to stop. And the arrogance of the employees too.

I think a good gamestore should also clearly define:

a) How much your game is worth before you're already 90% through the process. (based on how many copies they have in-store)
b) What will subtract the trade-in value, i.e. scratched disc, missing manual, even screwed up box art (I got stuck with a copy of Resistance that was obvoiusly the victim of a beer spill.)

And...

c) The same calculations for lowering trade-in value should be carried over to the re-sale value.

Sorry, you pretty much covered that one.

Fire the fanboys that show their bias openly....seriously

Theres one at my local EBgames and he talks sh*t about the PS3 everytime I see him working

Everytime I buy a PS3 game he treats me like crap...I seen him do it to other people too....like he'll straight up ignore them or be be extremly arrogant, and thats only when hes not bashing the PS3 to customers, or trying to talk people into buying 360 products.

But when I buy a 360 game, the friggen' moron has the biggest smile ever and treats me like royalty....It makes me sick.

Again...FIRE THE FANBOYS!...It's makes the store look unprofessional and it cost the store sales...How does it costs sales? It drives away new or potential customers and alienates it's loyal patrons and drives them off to other stores....I mean, nobody wants to feel hostility from the employees everytime they go to a store....do they?

A Play N Trade.
ive had bad expeirences at PnT...too bad too cause there is one in walking distance from my house and right next door to the place im working this summer.

perfect store... one that gives trade credit based on condition, rewarding those that keep their games nice, unlike GS that only takes off in bad condition games... (which are usually games that you bought from them to begin with in that same condition).

Used "Rentals"... apparently GS blacklists people who do this, and apparently im on the list cause i buy like 15 games a month and return like 3 or 4, so they see only the bad... so basically you buy a used game, you dont like it, take it back up to 2 times, after that 5 dollar charge after that.

cheaper used games and more credit, give like 40 for a game within 2 weeks of release and sell em for 50 used...and games loaded with scratxhes and without cases cheaper.

and most of all

good Customer service with people who know more about games then whats on the Wii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edi: Also price matchin, ive heard a guy at gs say they places like BB do it cause they make liek 50% on TVs...well GS makes 50% on used games...maybe if they werrent making billions in profits a year i would understand.

a box..like an ATM machine, just type in what game you want pop in the money, games pops out. done.
that way nobodys gonna bother me with 'would you like something else to go along with that'
or the constant 'may i help you sir?'

anyway, if your looking for a good time viewing games, just get on N4G right :)

What about a point system over and above buying new/trading games? Something like for every game you buy and every *mint condition* game you trade in you get 5 points. These points could be used as cash towards reserving games. It's small but it would be kind of neat to go in one day and have the checker tell you you reached 100 points which would count as $5 towards reserving an upcoming game.

Would be useless to some, but for people who buy alot of games it could add up pretty quickly.

Perfect Game Store-

Where all of the sales clerks are 100% unbiased and actually know what they are talking about.

Oh, plus get rid of the HORRIBLE trade in values for games.  I don't want to trade in a game that has only been out for a week and only get $35 back... i'll probably get full price on craigslist.

Also... if I pre-order a game, that means you are supposed to reserve me a F'ing copy so I can get it launch day.  I don't care what your excuse is "We didn't get the large shipment we thought" or "I guess our sales clerk accidently sold it".  I had a buddy that worked at EB... I know the f'ing reason is that an employee wanted a copy but didn't pre-order so just nabbed someone else's pre-order and used one of the above excuses.  Don't try and play me like a moron.

Finally... have your kiosks on and working at all times.  That's what they are there for, not so you can turn them off because the game is annoying to listen to.  You are payed by the companies to advertise their products, and we just might want to play that demo of Mario Kart Wii.

Perfect store... Hmm well the employees would need to be members of N4G so they know the freshest gaming news daily   In fact they would need the website open while working.  You can't stop bias but at least you can tame it.  No crazy fanatics but if they like Sony, MS, Nintendo more what can you do that's how you get to be a good sales person buy actually selling the idea of it not just saying what it is all about that's boring.

If they have a trade in program they give you money none of this in store credit crap.  It would have to be a big store because the best game store would have games from each generation so that one guy who is looking for some master system game can go there and pick it up same as the crazy dude who wants to get a Virtual Boy just for the fun of it.

Multiple stands for gaming including for old systems so you can try before you buy.  They will have people watching so to stop the ignorant jerks who try to stress test the systems while at the store and not on their own.  Hmm vending machines as well seeing that one needs to keep there energy maybe get Starbucks in there

Have guests from the gaming world come in maybe once every 3 months or so for a signing and Q&A sort of stuff.  I'll leave it at that for now.
