Ni No Kuni Official Thread - Wednesday, January 16, 2013 9:04 AM

Ni No Kuni is a classic RPG from Level 5, made in collaborations with the esteemed Studio Ghibli. The theme of the game revolves around a boy named Oliver who is torn betweed 2 different worlds, and thus the adventure beings. It is a throwback to old RPG's made in the times of before HD, with a pokemon style monster battling system, and beatiful art and graphics, it is quite easily the best use of cell shading ever seen. The game will feature a lengthy 40 hour campaign, and even more if you choose to complete the sidequests.

This. While the game looks gorgeous, we don't need 200 threads about it.

Saw the scans, replay: moderate, can't get my head around how a game with more than 40 hours of extras has a moderate replay value, also review complained from random battles, judging from the demo, battles are anything but random.

I don't know how necessary it was to make that additional thread but I suppose it doesn't really matter now

I don't spend a lot of time playing games lately either, but I'm sure I will make time for it over time. 40 hours is quite extensive, but I'm perfectly alright with not completing it right away - it really all depends on how compelling a title it proves to be

Yeah I agree guys, way too many **** threads. What are these PlayStation 3 owners thinking? The game looks terrible anyway

Let me try that again: god damn threads*. 'God damn' = OK, 'God[no space]damn' = Unacceptably offensive

On topic: I understand your motivation for making this thread as you've compiled review scores, well some at least, but it does look a bit silly sitting next to a similar thread posted yesterday. Anyway, yeah, Ni No Kuni, Wrath of the White B!tch, in stores January 22nd if you live in North America, etc.

Eurogamer gave it a 9? I somehow find that a little surprising

Also I find it to be distasteful that my thread was locked given it was created a day before this one...that's some good moderation going on

I further find it distasteful that your title states "Dupe Hunter" ... at least there is some humorous irony at the crux of all this

Ok let me be for serious! Santana's thread is about HIM being exited for the game and if anyone else was, Fatmans was also about HIM being exited for it. Mine is about reviews, previews, screenshots, impressions, ect, ect. Just because there's a thread about the same game doesn't mean it's the same or serves the same purpose, and kon stop with the spiteful trolling, go play some games or something....oh wait xbox doesn't have any.

I agree with that, I guess from a moderation standpoint it just looks like they're not doing their jobs if they leave both on the PS3 front page

There aren't any other half-decent games to talk about anyway. Maybe we should make a Black Ops 7 (that is the iteration they're on now, right?) official thread and talk about how different and unique it is in comparison to the other great Treyarch-made titles in the series

I like GT's review since they went a little more in depth than the other reviews I'd seen (as far as combat goes), but I must say (and I know this is nitpicky), I wasn't expecting them to reveal what happens to Oliver. I know it happens early on, but I was sort of going into the title knowing as little story as possible and I totally wasn't expecting that lol

@Satanas, I read the comments before I watched that Gametrailers review and lots of people said not to look at it due to spoilers, and I'm glad I didn't.

Also, I only been in this game for about an hour and WHAT THE FFUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!! The gameplay is sooo deep. I'm just going through the Wizard's Companion and reading the strategy guide(which is beautiful and informative and worth the $40 if you have to pay full price) - there is a lot of strategy behind this game. If you think about the effort put into people who "breed pokemon" just for some stat boosts, and you compare it to this game, it looks like child's play.

You have almost full control over how you grow their basic stats, there are 14 Genuses - which is sort of a basis for strengths and resistances. Each human character that you can control has a special set of Genuses that they are particularly good with which gives that genus a bonus in abilities. There are 4 Celestial signs that gives certain resistance to a certain element or exp bonus - some familiars can have multiple signs and some have none. Then, of course some have elemental values. This is a loose explanation of the whole Familiar system, and I didn't even get into the growth and evolutions.

Also, did I forget to mention that there are over 300 total familiars!?!?! That's the equivalent of about 2 generations of Pokemon! Not only are there a ton of them, they ALL evolve and they ALL have two options for third tier evolution. Add to that the fact that the familiars are apparently balanced and aren't necessarily stronger later in the game and the fact that it takes a WHILE to level them up to max - we have found our adult version of a deeper console version of the game we all love(d) so much 10 or so years ago. AND THAT'S JUST THE FAMILIARS.

There's alchemy, weapons/armors/accessories for your human characters AND your familiars, there's magic to be learned by humans along with abilities to be learned by familiars. Side quests, side bosses, Colosseum, casino - SOOO MUCH TIME TO BE LOST. And don't get me started on the Wizard's Companion. Ok, I'll dip a bit into it - Think of it as the book of hints you had in Folklore + Pokedex + Scriptures of Germonique (Final Fantasy Tactics) + Al Bhed Translator (Another World has it's own sort of secret language that's not forced on you like FFX) all rolled into one. It makes me kind of sad that I didn't purchase the Wizard's edition b/c that's the only way to get a hard copy with all the pages unhidden.

Prepare to have tons of fun times people, go get this game and support good JRPGs. I also think will hold over most of us who are waiting for Pokemon X and Y

Beautiful

JRPG then. And from what I've read, DAO is lacking. I also remember playing it and I didn't enjoy the combat.

Re:Ni No Kuni Official Thread - Tuesday, January 22, 2013 4:03 PM
Even more to the tactics/strategy of this game - familiars have stamina (didn't recognize this in the demo) so you want to have a good balance of movement between them and your humans so they don't tire during battle. Feels more and more like an episode of Pokemon/Digimon - which is not a bad thing.

I realize I've been comparing this to pokemon a lot, and it's honestly got a lot of differences, its just that this is the type of gameplay I wanted Nintendo to release on their consoles years ago.  There's obviously more depth than in any Pokemon game, but the battle system is spot on and because everything can move, there's actual action and each fight isn't just the same thing - the game is VERY unforgiving when it comes to using the wrong types of attacks/familiars in a fight. Dying WILL happen, lessons WILL be learned. How many JRPGs have we played where we could go the whole game and never get a game over? Not too many, and definitely not a lot lately. And given the amount of familiars and depth, there will potentially be a ton of replayability.

I was trying to go through the guide and pick a party and it cannot be done! Familiars need to be field tested, its not as easy as going with a certain element. I like this and I'm also scared of this. I'm scare because I'm afraid of having to spend countless hours trying to catch something only to find out that I hate it - but I guess that's part of the learning.
