@Satanas, I read the comments before I watched that Gametrailers review and lots of people said not to look at it due to spoilers, and I'm glad I didn't.
Also, I only been in this game for about an hour and WHAT THE FFUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!! The gameplay is sooo deep. I'm just going through the Wizard's Companion and reading the strategy guide(which is beautiful and informative and worth the $40 if you have to pay full price) - there is a lot of strategy behind this game. If you think about the effort put into people who "breed pokemon" just for some stat boosts, and you compare it to this game, it looks like child's play.
You have almost full control over how you grow their basic stats, there are 14 Genuses - which is sort of a basis for strengths and resistances. Each human character that you can control has a special set of Genuses that they are particularly good with which gives that genus a bonus in abilities. There are 4 Celestial signs that gives certain resistance to a certain element or exp bonus - some familiars can have multiple signs and some have none. Then, of course some have elemental values. This is a loose explanation of the whole Familiar system, and I didn't even get into the growth and evolutions.
Also, did I forget to mention that there are over 300 total familiars!?!?! That's the equivalent of about 2 generations of Pokemon! Not only are there a ton of them, they ALL evolve and they ALL have two options for third tier evolution. Add to that the fact that the familiars are apparently balanced and aren't necessarily stronger later in the game and the fact that it takes a WHILE to level them up to max - we have found our adult version of a deeper console version of the game we all love(d) so much 10 or so years ago. AND THAT'S JUST THE FAMILIARS.
There's alchemy, weapons/armors/accessories for your human characters AND your familiars, there's magic to be learned by humans along with abilities to be learned by familiars. Side quests, side bosses, Colosseum, casino - SOOO MUCH TIME TO BE LOST. And don't get me started on the Wizard's Companion. Ok, I'll dip a bit into it - Think of it as the book of hints you had in Folklore + Pokedex +
Scriptures of Germonique (Final Fantasy Tactics) + Al Bhed Translator (Another World has it's own sort of secret language that's not forced on you like FFX) all rolled into one. It makes me kind of sad that I didn't purchase the Wizard's edition b/c that's the only way to get a hard copy with all the pages unhidden.
Prepare to have tons of fun times people, go get this game and support good JRPGs. I also think will hold over most of us who are waiting for Pokemon X and Y
Beautiful
